Transportation in the Wasteland (Fallout 3)

Writing my Fallout fan fiction has brought me to the realization that I know little to nothing about the geography of the East Coast. It's so much simpler, living here on the West Coast, with only three states to count -- and Canada. How in the world do people travel to the Commonwealth (Massachusetts) from the Capital Wasteland (Washington DC) via

well the Enclave have lots of tec and vechiles like the Vertibird and the crawlers. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the wasterlanders had (stolen/recovered) rickety versions of them. And Tobar had the boat that took you to Point Lookout, I'm sure there are some other boats out there somewhere that can travel.
