When he slides out of bed, the springs creak and Arthur freezes. He holds his breath and listens to see if the Spaniard would wake up. Hours passed disguised as agonizing seconds and Arthur could hear Antonio stir.
Mumbling something unintelligible, the Spanish empire rolls over in bed and begins to cuddle with his pillow. The privateer lets out a breath of relief and he begins to make his way out the room- pulling his coat over him and placing his hat on his head as he leaves. Not once does he look back.
And when the door clicks shut, Antonio holds his breath for seconds that feel like hours and slides out of bed. He kneels down on the floor and brings his hands to his lips.
First, he prays for his precious protectorate, South Italy-may Lovino never learn of the sins the Spaniard commits when he is away from home.
Second, he prays for his husband and hopes that he will not have to because of his sins.
Next he prays for his loved ones. He prays for his brother, Francis and for Lovino’s younger brother, Feliciano and the frail friend, the Holy Roman Empire. He prays for Elizaveta who is taking care of his loved ones in the Habsburg home, Belgium who is taking care of Lovino and her ungrateful older brother. He even prays for that said ungrateful older brother so that his soul may be saved. Then he prays for all of his colonies, hoping that they will all rest well tonight and be safe from attack.
And when he feels as though he is running out of prayers he prays not for himself but for Arthur. He apologizes for all of the dog’s sins begs God to forgive and save the man from damnation.
When he feels as though he has asked for enough, he opens his eyes and looks up at the dark ceiling. "And if I may be selfish," He prays, "Please listen to this sinner."
