I used to work in the "customer service centre" for a sponsorship NGO & there were so many sad stories of sponsors who sent special packages to their kids but they never made it, especially around Christmas time. Usually, the package was intercepted by postal workers & taken home to their families.
On the other hand, there were a few success stories of sponsors who managed to send over tshirts & things & got lucky.
If you do send something, just be prepared for the chance that it won't get through. and try to make the package as small & inconspicuous (sp?!) as possible.
ALternatively, i'm not sure what your sponsorship org does, but do they have some sort of program where you can donate a little extra money to your child & the field staff use it to buy soemthing over there? usually it's up to them to decide what the family needs most, but at least you can guarantee that it's going to get to them.. Just an idea.

Good luck either way :)
