I haven't had the Internet at home in awhile, but I'm staying at my older sister Lucy's place tonight
1. I have started developing some knowledge of current events, largely because I've been tuning into the news almost every evening. It's all thanks to my ridiculously massive fangirl crush on Narelda Jacobs, the anchor of Channel 10's Perth nightly news. It started with me tuning in just to see someone who was Aboriginal and queer on TV every night, but before long my desire to show my support turned into a full-blown crush. If you hear girlie shrieking and/or swooning coming from the Chandler household, it'll either be me tuning into Channel 10 News, or my little sister seeing the New Moon trailer on TV.
My girlfriend Sarah is, naturally, doling out a healthy amount of teasing ("But you'll miss Lezzie McLez-Lez," she says, if I want to drag her off to make out somewhere between five and six on a weeknight), although she totally tunes in every night to see what Narelda says/is wearing.
Rachel Maddow better look out, because Narelda Jacobs is freaking awesome. When I found out that Narelda Jacobs was MC-ing the Perth Pride ball, I totally screamed like my little sister when she sees a picture of Zac Efron. I don't think I should go, though, partly because the tickets are crazy expensive, and partly because I won't be able to stop myself from walking up to Narelda and saying something accidentally creepy.
2. Sarah left for Melbourne on Monday night, and my mother, brother and younger sister left for Europe yesterday night. Getting Mum and the kids off to the airport was a bit of a palaver, because Mum kept holding everything up to have cigarettes, plus she overpacked by about ten kilos, so our family turned into one of those families you see at the airport, unpacking and repacking everything. I'm going to miss the family, but at least I'll get some peace and quiet to write. I miss Sarah too... a lot... but I'm trying to think of this as an opportunity for me to have some time to myself.
3. I started a new job! It's at a different newsagency, about ten minutes' walk from my house. The pay is better, and nobody has screamed at me or accused me of stealing. I haven't wanted to cry even once. It's brilliant.
4. Re. Michael Jackson - it was a little creepy that I was listening to the Jackson Five on my way to work this morning, and distinctly thinking, Oh, Michael, you were so adorable before... well, your life happened to you. This was before I knew anything about his passing.
5. The past week or so, I've been asking myself a very important question: why, oh why, isn't Calamity Jane a cult lesbian classic? I watched it with Sarah and Bridget on Monday, and it was FANTASTIC. Not just fantastically gay, but FANTASTIC. I can't even begin to describe what a feel-good movie it is, going way beyond the fact that it's just about the gayest straight movie I've ever seen. Needless to say, we all developed humungous crushes on Doris Day, because she spends the movie looking like this:
And singing like this:
The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away)Secret LoveI can't describe all the ways that this movie is really, really gay, because I don't want to rob anyone who decides to watch it of the pure, unadulterated glee experienced by Sarah, Bridget and myself on Monday.
Now, I'm off to try and catch up with my friendslist. I'll get in touch with people very soon.
