I have a virus theory about this acute lower back pain. I had exactly the same problem: acute pain for no reason. I tried all sorts of things. My hypothesis is that it is caused by inflammation of lower back nerves due to an infection. The evidence is that three people in my office all developed the symptoms at about the same time all with no physical reason. Naturally this is the perfect virus for baddies to create to incapacitate armies etc

Ouch. Sounds a lot like a herniated disc, except you haven't had the moment where it goes scrunch. I did mine just taking my socks off, ended up crawling out of my bedroom in my underpants shouting "HELP!", worst pain I've ever experienced and very much as you describe it: one wrong move puts all the muscles into spasm and you make a "Yeaaaargh!" noise.

If it is that and it's easing then keep moving about, carefully, if you can. Apparently the old advice about resting it is completely wrong and it's better to get up and about once you can move without getting a very personal definition of the word 'agony'.

Good Lord. Whatever it is, it sounds horrific. I am so sorry! Your grit in the face of this is genuinely inspiring.

Not sure being inspiring is much solace, but perhaps it is some. I hope it passes quickly, quickly. xoxo
