Well, the 2Gb iPod nano ($299) is good if you don't absolutely need the FM tuner and recorder (though they may come out with an attachment for the nano that has these features. Otherwise, the Creative MP3 players are worth looking at. The user interface isn't quite up there with the iPod's click wheel (to be honest, I have yet to find something that is) and I'm not sure about AAC playback (same quality, smaller files = more songs), but the sound quality is supposed to be good with the Creative units. Which is what you'd expect from the company that made the Sound Blaster.

Hmm..You raise a valid point nerd. Here's what I ended up going with Iriver T10. Check out the Specs.

It's not bad actually. I gave it a go this morning when I was riding to work. The standard speakers are pretty shithouse so today it will be my mission to research some nice kans that wrap around the back of my head so I can wear 'em when I'm riding which will be their main purpose of use. Ya dig?!

I so wanted a Nano but it didn't have radio and I love Jaye and the Doc in the morning. And this one records. As you can tell I have that new gadget excitement going on.

I was going to suggest Podcasts when you said that, but I know that's not the same as live radio. Anyway, looks like you went with a good choice so it's alright.

As for headphones, I have two words for you - Sennheiser HD-497s. Best $150 I ever spent. I'm still using them with my second iPod! Best part is the detachable headphone cable. Headphone cable craps out and you think "damn it, gotta buy a new pair", right? Unlpug the headphone cable and head down to your nearest JB Hi-Fi or Sennheiser spare parts retailer, pick yourself up a new one and BAM! Good as new. How's that for a slice of fried gold? =P

I highly recommend picking them up. Even if you don't, my advice is buy the best pair you can afford. You get what you pay for and a little extra scratch coughed up now for a decent pair is going to more than pay for itself if you're planning to use your player a lot.

Or if you still want earphones, get a pair of noise-isolating in-ear earphones. They'll isolate a lot of the ambient noise so you won't have to crank them up loud at all. Bit pricey over normal ear "buds" but your ears will thank you. =P

These Shure E2c's are a good start.

Oh deary. You're alright. It doesn't have a flag but I'm considering attaching those big bags that bums use to collect cans and attach a trolley behind so that I can make it my home away from home.
