"The commission on that would have really improved the day's take. Anyway, Mr Adams always reminds me of Ragnar Redtooth." Anya went on checking the shelf and making notes on the restocking lists as she spoke.

"Ragnar's wife ended up comparing him to a great, wallowing whale in just exactly the right words." She tapped the tip of her pen against her teeth, for a moment, as she made a quick estimate of the "Wing of Bat" jars. Then she added, almost as an afterthought,

"He kept the village fed all winter, after he beached himself. Ragnar didn't like water at all."
