I posted this poem (without the extra pipe characters) a long time ago, and no one said anything, so I thought I would explain it.Slant

Our perception | serves to distract.
This sentence | is influenced by expectation.
The pipe characters signify where the reader is supposed to switch lines while reading. I guess it was pretty subtle. My thinking

The medium is the message, bro. To say that meaning in poetry can suffer from or be obscured by artful presentation is to misconstrue that presentation as apart from the meaning.

Perhaps it varies with the type of poem. I suppose I am mostly talking about narrative poems, like Beowulf. I like the story of Beowulf more when it is told as prose, rather than its original form (even translated into modern english)--it's just easier for me to comprehend it that way. The verse/meter is distracting. Not to say it's 'bad,' but I suppose I value different things from those who typically enjoy the 'poem' aspect of the poem.

On the other hand, say, The Raven is fine for me how it is. Hm.
