When Ironic first came out I thought it was, you know, not terrible, but generally overhyped. This issue was compounded by the fact that, not long after, we were "learning" about irony in English class in high school or something and the point was made that that song doesn't have any irony.

So basically you're congratulating her for making a bunch of guesses and getting a couple of them right? The plane example is particularly strange because the whole song is about what she thought of as ironic but nobody anywhere thinks of irony when they think of sarcasm.

But anyway a big problem with that song is that it is so painfully obtuse that it's hard to pay enough attention to it to criticize it properly. I'm not going to tolerate 10 000 SPOONS long enough to judge it.

I haven't replied in a while because I keep thinking I want to listen to the song again and see if I can spot some examples where she got the guesses wrong.

Even on the assumption that she doesn't know the definition of the word, she clearly understands the application -- many of the other songs on Jagged Little Pill make quite pointed use of it. I suppose I am not trying to congratulate her so much as point at the English teachers that are all congratulating themselves for being smarter than the masses somehow, and say, hey, isn't your definition overly narrow?
