“We need to talk,” Rodney sighed, voice almost sounding almost defeated. He sighed and looked over at John, blue eyes dulled with lack of sleep and overwork.

“I know,” John replied, voice gruff and gravely. His beard was grown out, his hair was a disaster, and his clothes looked like they had seen better day. Which they had.

“Do you wanna grab dinner?” Rodney asked, not truly feeling hungry, but knowing both of them should eat something more than power bars and coffee.

John nodded silently and stood on momentarily wobbly legs. He straightened up and looked over to the scientist. “Mess?”

“Then a room, I don't care whose. I just wanna have some quite, alone time with you,” Rodney replied.

“Okay. Yours, after all, it's closer to the mess by a ways,” John rolled his stiff shoulders and looked around. The lab was finally deserted now that the latest siege was over and the Wraith had left for the time being. He didn't want to think about the clean up in the morning, or the fights they still had ahead of them.

“Alright,” Rodney followed as they made their way to the mess.

They saw very few people in the halls, and even fewer that seemed to be awake at the tables. Many people were slumped over, fork or spoon still full of food while their head was pillowed on a hand or arm. They gathered their own food and headed back out, going straight to Rodney's room and only seeing one person on the way.

“Here we are,” Rodney announced, knowing that John knew which quarters belonged to the loudmouthed scientist, but feeling he needed to anyway. “Don't mind the mess.”

John walked in; expecting chaos, but only finding contained piles of work and clothing. He gave a lopsided grin as they both sat on Rodney's bed. “Not that bad.”

“I have something to tell you. And I've been wanting to tell you for a while now. I just couldn't bring myself to tell you for fear of your response. Or the response of others. But now I'm pretty sure I don't care what anyone but you thinks, and I'm pretty sure you're not going to have a violent response. So, I'm just going to go ahead and say it.”

John watched the other man with comically wide eyes, not daring to move.

“I'm in love with you. It was kind of a lust thing in the beginning because … let's face it you're hot. But as I got to know you it became something much more. And when I realized I was in love with you we regained contact with Earth, and I was afraid for your career. Now they've removed that stupid military law about gays so it won't matter. And, I know I'm rambling a little but, I just want you to know that if you don't feel the same way it'll be okay. I'll be mopey for a while but I'll be good about it and just say we had a falling out and everything will get back to normal. I don't want to loose you as a friend, but I want more with you. I...” Rodney stumbled in his rant as a hand touched his to stem the flow of words.

“I know.”

“You do?”

“And it's about time, isn't it? That you finally said something. Either one of us for that matter,” John said quietly. He leaned forward and invaded Rodney's personal space. “I've been wanting to do this since you told me to picture the solar system.” He leaned the rest of the way forward and kissed Rodney gently, lips barely brushing against each other.

Rodney moaned and leaned further into the kiss. “I thought I was a genius?”

“You are. With everything but people.”

“Hm, I think I need to study you more.”

“I'm all for that.”

“Right after dinner,” Rodney laughed as his stomach made a loud protesting noise.

“You really are a genius.”

They shared another kiss.

And the rest of their lives.

The End.
