So a guy I went to high school with just posted pictures of his new chinchilla on facebook. I noticed one had the chin in the ball, so I commented on it and let him know that they aren't really safe for them and that they can overheat and die ( Read more... )

At this point, there really isn't much you can do if this girl isn't interested in your advice. You've made your points and she doesn't want to listen. At best, I'd recommend keeping an eye on his page for more info and if you start to believe that the chinchilla is in serious danger of neglect or mistreatment, contact the police at their non-emergency number and file a complaint of animal endangerment.

Unfortunately there isn't much else you can do without directly interfering. :\

It appears that she isn't going to listen to you. She's 15 and 15 is a touchy age where the teen thinks that they are an adult and that they know everything. Her brother is the person to address if you can, but it looks like she isn't going to make it easy. You made your point, all you can do is hope that they listen. If you want to continue to pursue the issue, just say something along these lines. Use my words is you like.

"Listen, I'm only saying this out of concern for the chinchilla's safety because those balls do concern me. You don't have to do anything just because I suggest it, but I am trying to look out for you and your chinchilla. If you must continue to use the ball, that is your call, but I strongly suggest that you stop or at very least limit the time the chinchilla spends in there and keep an eye on him/her."

Thanks for the advice. I sent the guy a message and just told him nicely that if he ever had any questions about chinchillas he could ask me. He seemed pretty cool about it. I found out he's also keeping the chin in a big fish tank. I let him know politely that it's probably not a good idea and recommended a few brands of cages (he said he was considering getting a new one anyway.)

If he's handy (or has a dad or friend who is...) I recommend to EVERYONE Kindra's cages from http://www.spoiledchins.net

I LOVE melamine cages as they're more like furniture, and they're SUPER SUPER easy to clean.

She sells the plans for $5 (it goes to her animal rescues), and the materials for the cage part itself (I don't use the drawer) is about $120-$150.
