Thanks for the idea. :) Unfortunately, the pan is curved, so I don't think I could get something like that to fit in snuggly, but perhaps I can get some wire mesh to wire over the top of the grille. I'd have to make sure all the pointy bits would be covered though. He seemed to have fun running up and down the ramps last night. His old cage has only one level. :(
That's a nice cage, once you fix the flooring grate issue/litter pan. Google "Bass Equipment Company", and contact them about a custom metal pan for the bottom. You'll probably need the horizontal measurements of the cage when you call (the depth and width, but not the height) and the best choices for material are either galvanized steel or powder coated steel/aluminum
( ... )
Thanks for the name of that company. I'll look into that. My other thoughts at the moment are getting some thin metal strips to wire around the outside edge, kind of like the urine guards I've seen in bunny cages, or fitting some mesh to the top of the grille. The shelves and ladders the cage came with are actually solid metal, not wire. I do have some grass mats ordered, but they haven't arrived yet.
I am pretty sure he's male. He's been rather neglected for at least two years, so he doesn't like people. I couldn't even get my hand near him when he first arrived, but now, when I let him out to play in the kitchen, he'll hop up onto my lap. But he won't let anyone hold him, yet.
My town isn't big enough for chain pet stores. There is a local pet store here that sells chinchilla pellets pretty cheaply. They buy small animal food in bulk, then package them in baggies to buy. I can get Timothy hay at Walmart for around $4 for a bag that's lasted him about two months.
Just an note on Pellets... if you live anywhere near a Farm Supply Store they can order 25 lb bags of Mazuri (a good chin food) for about 20 bucks, that is what a friend and I do, and split the cost. (I have 3 Chins, she has 4). You can also get good Timothy Hay there as well, but I do buy THAT at PetSmart... they carry Oxbow which is one of the better Hay brands. :)
