i am having some problems with my chinchilla, and i was wondering if any of you could help me? i have been posting on another chin forum, so i will copy and paste here under a cut.
OMG! This is so similar to what happened to my best friend's little guy, I am going to give her this link and see if she can help you at all. I am not sure she is on this community though, so it may be me sending her your info and relaying it back to you.
The baby food is good! That was what our vet recommended for her little guy. Her first indication of her chins issues was the penis thing, then it went bad after that... he rapidly lost weight and so forth. They actually filed his teeth as part of his treatment... but I dont remember the exact details.
I want to say something like he had a sharp spot on his tooth that was cutting him, and they filed it, but by then he refused to eat... the penis thing was a symptom of the overall issue...
When she gets home from school she'll be able to tell you more...
You need to take him to the vet ASAP. IT sounds like he has malo. Malocclusion it is where the teeth grow in a hook formation. It is possible through his chewing he broke a tooth off and it is growing in wrong back down into his gums. This is very painful and they do not want to eat or anything. I lost my baby Ollie to this. It is very important you get him to the vet and get check for malo. Does he have watery eyes or any drooling that you are noticing? If he does then please take him to get his teeth filed. The critcal care is great you should be feeding him every 2-4 hours that and syringes of water. Also you can get stage 1 baby food my vet suggested only vegtables and like applesauce to try to get everything you can down him. I hope this helps. I hope he gets better.
And yes Heaven is right Ollie's penis was sticking out. My vet said it was due to the stress of being in pain. He said for an adult to feel something similar would be like our wisdom teeth coming in and being impacted. Another suggestion make sure he has pleanty of wood to chew on. I hope this helps.
