I recently adopted a chinchilla who was dumped at the pet store that mys sister works at. I already have one chinchilla, Bai, so I put the new chin, who I've named Sherman, in my extra cage. I've set it up next to Bai's cage so they can see each other and get used to each other ( Read more... )

I adopted a pair from a busy family with two kids, a German shepherd, lots of birds....a too small cage with wire floor , too hot house and poor diet.
They took a looooong time to acclimate , and are even still pretty shy (particularly the younger one)

I have no clue healthwise, but that's just what my two went through emotionally after a rough start.

My vote is also for more time. We rescued a rat from a way too small cage, little human interaction, no toys (A wheel, a tube/shelf, food bowl and water bottle and that was it) and no companion. She'd been like that since she left the pet shop, she was 8 months when we got her. It took her a week to come and even look at us, before that if she heard movement she'd run away from even the sounds of our voice. Yesterday was the first time she bruxed at us and that's 6 months down the line. Her cage mate was a rescue as well but is so much more friendlier to people than Tiff is, maybe Rommie was better cared for than Tiff, maybe it's a personality difference. Sadly it's sometimes just what you have to go through with rescues when people have been horrible to the animals.

Good luck with the little fella, I hope he comes round quickly.

He probably just needs more time. A new living situation can be scary and stressful. I wouldn't worry too much yet.

I'd recommend keeping him away from Bai for now though. A lady at my vets office adopted a new chinchilla and kept it in a cage beside the one she already had. Turns out new chinchilla was sick, and her first chin caught whatever it was and she had to put her down. It was so sad. It's hard to tell if they're sick since they hide it so well, so it's best to keep them in separate rooms for at least a few weeks.
