So, Emma is really enjoying her surgical rotation at Vandy. Big surprise, I know. I told her not to worry, that she would find her niche, and of course it is the niche that she long ago knew she wanted to be part of ( Read more... )

I second Diana Wynne Jones! Also the Mercedes Lackey Heralds of Valdemar Series, starting with Arrow's Flight ( I think) and some Heinlein; Glory Road, The Curious Profession of Jonathan Hoag, and... well, there's one other one about witches but I can't remember the name.

Although I really, really, REALLY hate to admit it, I enjoyed the Twilight series a lot. And the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. They have werewolves and fairies in them, not just vampires.

The sookie stackhouse books are extremely poorly written from what I've read of them. I much prefered the HBO series to the first book. But that's just me. I did like the first twilight book, and admit to reading it not once, but three times. The fourth book killed the rest of the series for me, so I pretend that only the first book exists and make up my own stories about what happens w/ Edward and Bella.

I didn't think they were that bad, and I'm pretty picky about what I read.

Checkout those Heinlein books. He's the best writer I've ever read. He can write a book about farming in space and make it a pleasure to read.

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how a vampire would make sperm, myself.

If you're looking for non-fantasy,try Tim Sandlin's Skipped Parts, anything by Jodi Picoult, or anything by Nelson DeMille, but especially the John Corey books.

And if you haven't read Alan Moore's Watchmen, now is a good time, with the movie coming out in 6 weeks. I know it's a graphic novel, and that kept me fromreading it for years, but once I did I realized that it HAD to be in graphic novel form.

then I wrote a 7 page essay comparing it to the Aristotelean poetic ideal.
