seeking advice
Super Junior, Kibum/Donghae, PG, 1410 words
AU. Kibum continues to make unfortunate life decisions.

seeking advice

Kibum figured it out even before Heechul informed him, condescendingly, as if he had lost the more important functions of his brain after meeting Donghae (which, Kibum thought, might not be too far off the mark).

"I want to make him jealous," he said flatly.

"I'm taking the girl he likes out, whom I have no interest in whatsoever, so I can make him jealous."

He stared at himself in the mirror and groaned, leaning his forehead against the cool surface.

Kyuhyun had been wrong. His life had already turned into a bad TV love triangle.

"You want to make him jealous," Heechul informed him, condescendingly.

"Thanks, Heechul. I hadn't figured that one out."

"On a scale of stupidity, I think this ranks much higher than me just spreading a very flattering rumor about you." Heechul sucked loudly at his smoothie. "Aha," he said after a moment, smirking. "That's why you're talking to me again, isn't it? Now you want advice!"

Kibum stayed resolutely silent, admitting nothing. The two of them walked across the sunny quad, Heechul on his way to class and Kibum on his way to the library for the hour he had free. Kibum had elected to have lunch on his own today, because frat boys, sorority girls, and friends who seemed only to revel in his misery didn't make for the best company. He'd run into Heechul on his way out of the dining hall, however, and Heechul had ditched his group (all Fashion majors, Kibum suspected, from the clothes they'd been wearing) to latch onto Kibum.

Nearly a week of silent treatment from Kibum had done little to dull Heechul's prying, because he was used to Kibum being quiet anyway. And Kibum had eventually broken down to talk about the new twist in the bad drama that was his life, whereupon Heechul had laughed at him.

"Well if you want advice," Heechul said thoughtfully, "then you should figure out what Jessica wants from you first. If she's not serious, then take her out and make Donghae jealous, and then make out with him. If she is, you gotta tell her you're not interested."

Kibum blinked at him in shock.

"That...might be the best advice I've ever gotten from you, Heechul."

Heechul shoved at him and he stumbled slightly on the brick pathway. "The best advice you've ever gotten from me was to go to that frat party where you first made out with Donghae. Asshole."

"That wasn't advice; that was coercion."

Kibum snorted and Heechul shoved him again, but then was distracted. "Hey," he exclaimed, eyes trained in the distance. "I think that's Theta Nu Xi and Tri-Sig's fundraiser. Let's go." He grabbed hold of Kibum's arm and took off, dragging a bewildered and unhappy Kibum behind him.

A long folding table had been set up on the quad next to the brickway. Colorful posters fluttered from the edges and at least a half dozen girls stood behind it in pink shirts. A crowd of students milled around the table, gathering and chatting. Kibum couldn't actually make out what was going on, but he would find out soon enough as Heechul barreled his way into the group of people, elbowing left and right unrepentantly.

"Heechul!" a girl's voice exclaimed, and she sound too pleased to see him to know him well. No one who really knew Kim Heechul would ever be so glad to see him, in Kibum's opinion. Unless they were getting some fringe benefits, he conceded, and shuddered a little bit. He didn't want to think about that too hard.

"Tiffany!" Heechul slunk up to the front of the table and beamed at her. "Bake sale, huh? How cute. It's like we're in elementary school again."

"Hush, oppa," she said with a laugh. "Our bake sales rake in the cash!"

"Fundraising again? What's it for?"

"Breast cancer awareness." She pointed at her shirt, which sported, along with ΘΝΞ and ΣΣΣ, a picture of a pink ribbon and the words Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Kibum tried to look without appearing as if he were staring at her chest, which Heechul was blatantly doing.

"Sorry, I see no words," he said with a leer. "But I would do anything I could to save those breasts."

Tiffany swatted him with a laugh.

"I keep forgetting how awesome Theta Nu Xi's letters are," he added with a dramatic sigh. "If I weren't against all Greek organizations on principle, you know I'd join yours, Tiffany."

"Heechul, they're a sorority. Girls only."

Kibum turned to find Choi Siwon behind him, shaking his head at Heechul but smiling. He had dimples, Kibum noticed. Of course.

The other girls at the table immediately began to vie for Siwon's attention. It was sickening how they all waved at him, called his name, and batted their eyelashes. They might as well throw themselves at him, Kibum thought in disgust. It was practically as bad as the way Jessica had thrown herself at - him. Kibum paused, disoriented.

Siwon graced the girls with a smile and a nod, but returned his attention to Heechul, who had spun around to look up at him.

"Do your frats spell out words like ONE?" he demanded. "I think not. You lot just have a mishmash of random, ugly letters. I hold you personally responsible too, Siwon. Keep that in mind." He flicked his hair. "Now you should buy at least two cupcakes from Tiffany to make up for insulting her awesome Greek name, and give both to me."

As Siwon laughed and agreed, Kibum edged away from his roommate and his flock of admirers, friends, and general onlookers. Really, there was just too much Greek around him for him to be comfortable. He had to get to the library anyway.

"Kibum!"

He stopped. Jessica stepped around a tall guy with blue hair and appeared in front of him, bright and cheery. Her hair was in pigtails and he frowned at the flash of annoyance that resulted.

"Hi," she said. "I was wondering if I could ask a favor? Kyuhyun mentioned that you aced Anatomy last semester - do you think I could get a couple tips from you? Maybe some tutoring, but only if you're up for it," she added hastily, brushing the bangs out of her eyes. She looked up at him, a half-smile on her lips and a little pleading in her eyes.

"Uh." Kibum hated how he was constantly being thrown off-balance lately. This was why he avoided people generally. They were such a hassle. "Sure, I guess." It was hard to say no to her, even when his first instinct was to turn her down, get the fuck out, and have nothing more to do with her or the Greek system or Lee Donghae, for that matter.

She looked thrilled. "Oh my god, thank you so much. Do you have some time this afternoon? Around four or so? Here, let me give you my number and we can meet up, maybe at Starbucks?" She dug around in her tote bag (royal purple), pulled out her phone (silver with purple and white charms), and beamed expectantly at him.

He gave her his number, entered hers into his phone when she called, and left for the library a little dazed and still too discomfited for his liking.

He barely knew the girl. Why was she so interested in him?

He supposed he would have to take Heechul's advice and figure out if Jessica really did like him before using her to make Donghae jealous.

Kibum sighed. What he would give for the simple days before that frat party and his life had turned into a ridiculous romantic drama. He would rather watch Kyuhyun and Zhou Mi dance around each other, feigning disinterest. At least that was ridiculous romantic drama that had left his life mostly untouched.

A little later, after Kibum had gone to class, Donghae texted Kibum a message that took Kibum most of the hour to decipher. He realized right before he met Donghae in front of his classroom that he'd been asked if he wanted to join in on Sigma Chi's unofficial video game competition that afternoon, for a great, loud, and possibly drunken time.

When he told Donghae that he already had plans with Jessica, Donghae's eyes dimmed. Kibum felt his stomach twist and thought, Oh. This was not a good sign.

He really needed to talk to Jessica.
