Chasing the Thrill
01; walking
Ryoma learned to drag around a tennis racket before he learned to walk and Fuji couldn’t help but chuckle over the baby pictures as he flipped through the album.
02; waltz
One would think that someone as athletic as Ryoma, who had mastered the one-footed split-step so effortlessly, would be a better dancer, but Fuji’s toes could testify otherwise.
03; wishes
Even as vice-president of the Ryoma-sama and Fuji-senpai RabuRabu Support Club, Sakuno still couldn’t help wishing, sometimes, that Ryoma would smile at her the way he did only for Fuji and his camera.
04; wonder
“Wow,” said Ryoma, stepping into Fuji’s room and looking around, “I hope you don’t expect us to have sex in here with all those pictures of your brother hanging on the wall.”
05; worry
Fuji’s smile was as careless and brittle as usual when the subject of Ryoma returning to America came up until Ryoma, escaping Kikumaru’s sobbing stranglehold, tugged down his cap with a snort and said of course he wasn’t going to leave Seigaku; they had the Nationals to win.
06; whimsy
“Let’s get tattoos!” Fuji exclaimed spontaneously, beaming at Ryoma, who followed grudgingly until he saw the cute kitty-cat face his boyfriend had chosen for him.
07; waste
“Mada mada dane,” said Ryoma to his opponent across the court, smirk widening, and Fuji smiled from the sidelines, already knowing the outcome of the match.
08; whiskey and rum
“You’re Will to my Jack, savvy,” Ryoma informed him, slurring a bit as he lurched around, half-empty rum bottle in one hand and the pirate’s sword of his Halloween costume in the other, the tip swishing through the air dangerously near Fuji’s nose.
09; war
Fuji’s eyes opened and then narrowed when he saw the easy, too-friendly way Rokkaku’s freshman captain slung his arm around Ryoma’s shoulders.
10; weddings
When Tezuka asked Fuji to be his best man, Fuji leaned in and slid his hand over Tezuka’s shoulder, purring, “So who’s the lucky girl?” only to be answered by a sharp tug on his arm and an annoyed, “Not you,” from an irritated Ryoma.
11; birthday
“How old are you?” Fuji asked softly, but he didn’t want to know, really, as he pulled Ryoma to him, burying his face in that soft hair and losing himself in the years between them that stood in kilometer-wide stretches.
12; blessing
Fuji glanced at the prone, slightly twitching figure at his feet, mouth curling up, and told Ryoma he would take this as implicit approval of their relationship from Nanjiroh.
13; bias
The senior photo editor of Tennis Pro Weekly shuffled through the folder that his best photographer had submitted to him, noting that, as always, Fuji Syuusuke’s best snapshots seemed to be of tennis wonder Echizen Ryoma.
14; burning
Ryoma looked in dismay at what had supposed to have been Fuji’s birthday cake, the pile of burnt, slightly smoky culinary disaster a far cry from the perfect round, white cake the recipe picture had promised.
15; breathing
It took four tries before Ryoma figured out how to breathe and kiss at the same time, but Fuji had had fun teaching him.
16; breaking
“It’s okay if I beat you, right?”
17; belief
“It’s still too early for you to beat me.”
18; balloon
It said something for Ryoma’s character-and the long years he’d lived with Nanjiroh-that he replied, deadpan, to Fuji’s teasing query on the contents of the box, “Balloons, ribbed for your pleasure.”
19; balcony
“O Romeo, Romeo,” said Ryoma in tones of great distress…before pausing in disgust and flopping, unladylike, against the railing, scowling when the director smiled genially at him and told him that, saa, didn’t he made a wonderful girl?
20; bone
Fuji looked reproachfully at Karupin and sucked his sore fingers in his mouth, saying rather petulantly to Ryoma as he waved around the toy bone, “I don’t know why your cat is so unfriendly, Echizen, when I even brought him a chew toy!”
21; quiet
Ryoma had never been prone to superfluous words and he found that he liked the other boy best when he was silent, smiling, and speaking through the expression in his eyes and the curve of his return shot.
22; quirks
“Those are lovely undergarments, Echizen,” Fuji said in amusement, watching the other boy flush and glare and march off in his duckie-covered boxers, in search of pajama pants and muttering about no more sleepovers, ever.
23; question
Everyone wondered but no one dared ask why Tezuka never interfered, never took initiative to prevent or at least stall the relationship, and very few people knew it was because Fuji occasionally let him keep a webcam on.
24; quarrel
“Stop trying to grope me in public, Fuji-senpai!” Ryoma hissed, batting away Fuji’s hand for the sixth time that morning.
25; quilting
Ryoma was never going to let Fuji decide what to do for their dates anymore; last week it had been snake-handling lessons at a local zoo and this week it was a quilting bee with Fuji’s community grandmothers.
26; jump
“Will you jump with me?” Fuji asked when he quit tennis, but Ryoma could only stare uncomprehendingly at him, feeling nothing short of betrayed, and Fuji sighed and looked at him with eyes that were falling further away without him.
27; jester
Apparently Nanjiroh thought he was a laugh a minute as he told his third raucous joke in the past five minutes, mindless of his son’s dark scowls and mulish set to his lips, instead clearly taking a great sort of satisfaction in seeing that Ryoma’s boyfriend liked to tease the brat as well.
28; jousting
Fuji watched the door close behind Ryoma, who was suffering the attentions of an enthusiastic Momoshiro and energetic Kikumaru, and wondered when the younger boy would be willing to look at him again, wondered when things would be easy again.
29; jewel
“Hey,” said Ryoma, annoyed, as Fuji stepped over the wires tangled on his bedroom floor and unplugged the video console, “I was just about to get the Diamond of Eternity, save the princess from clutches of evil, and win the game.”
30; just
There was something deliciously satisfying in seeing Fuji squirm under unwanted attentions, when so often he was the one to inflict said attentions, and Ryoma discovered that Valentine’s Day had a redeeming side to it, after all.
31; smirk
“That, I believe, was the sound of you promising not to let Momo get that close to you ever again,” Fuji said cheerfully as he snapped a picture of the back of Ryoma’s bare body, still flushed and dripping water from a recent shower: blackmail.
32; sorrow
“I lost,” Fuji conceded quietly, racket hanging loosely in his hand while he watched as Ryoma set his shoulders, tugged down his cap, his mouth curling into that familiar line of determination, and moved on.
33; stupidity
Ryoma knew it would probably be the stupidest thing he had ever done in his life, but he just couldn’t resist the look smoldering in Fuji’s eyes when he promised that Ryoma would enjoy being tied up.
34; serenade
The first week he was back in America, the only CD Ryoma played in his Discman was the mood music Fuji had given him, listening and missing a team he had known for less than a year.
35; sarcasm
“No, I’m only using him because he buys me things,” Ryoma explained, pokerfaced, to a boggle-eyed Horio inquiring after Ryoma and Fuji’s “relationship.”
36; sordid
Fuji tried not to think of the pale throat in his dreams, dark hair, vivid eyes, and breathy sighs, instead clenching his hands in his sheets as he wondered if this was what Tezuka had meant by warning him to tread carefully around Echizen.
37; soliloquy
When Fuji finished listing all the reasons he liked Ryoma, Yuuta’s face was flaming red and he looked desperate to escape from the small confines of the car and why was Yumiko-neesan chuckling?
38; sojourn
Ryoma liked the way Fuji combed his fingers through Ryoma’s hair as the younger boy lay sprawled across the grass, dozing, shaded by the tree from the sun and the bustle of life.
39; share
“You can top tonight,” Ryoma allowed generously and blue eyes flashed predatorily at him as he chuckled, carrying an armful of Karupin into his room and dropping him into the lap of Ryoma’s surprised boyfriend.
40; solitary
After Fuji told Ryoma, smiling sweetly, that he was never alone, Ryoma couldn’t stop looking over his shoulder for a week.
41; nowhere
The day Ryoma finally beat his father, Fuji was out of town on the third-year school trip, and so Ryoma celebrated by putting off his homework and playing a video game instead, eyeing his phone throughout the night.
42; neutral
Oishi desperately refused to take sides, wishing himself elsewhere, when Fuji and Ryoma turned to him and demanded to know which was worse: a brother complex or a sadomasochistic fetish.
43; nuance
“No, senpai,” Ryoma explained in a bored voice, “in this instance, ‘cock’ means ‘to tilt upwards.’”
44; near
One of Fuji’s arms were pressing down on Ryoma’s chest, making it hard to breathe, and the other had caught strands of Ryoma’s hair under it, and their skin was sticking together from drying sweat and Ryoma thought this was possibly the most uncomfortable position he’d been in since Tezuka had walked in on them in the clubhouse last week.
45; natural
“I didn’t know you could bend that way,” Fuji murmured, eyeing Ryoma’s form with great interest before asking, “Did you learn from Eiji?”
46; horizon
Ryoma had always been looking off into the future, for his next opponent, next win, but now when he looked forward he saw only Fuji offering something more than tennis.
47; valiant
Fuji conceded that it was a good effort Arai made in the ranking matches, but Ryoma only laughed under his breath at the attempt, hat brim pulled low, knowing that Fuji could never be challenged so easily.
48; virtuous
There were days when Ryuuzaki wished she’d become a priestess for some faraway temple rather than discovering an interest in coaching tennis and today, with Fuji and Echizen’s antics, was most definitely one of those days.
49; victory
“Game and match: Echizen, seven games to six."
50; defeat
The first time Ryoma truly looked at Fuji was the day he lost to a pair of sharp blue eyes and a smile softened with lies, hiding a brilliance that Ryoma was only now beginning to fathom and still determined to break.
