Aoi loved Kai. He truly and honestly did, with all good intentions and every fiber of his being. He lived for moments when Kai smiled at him or did something subconsciously, like lean their faces in what Aoi considered to be too close, where their noses would almost touch, their lips almost graze. It was in those moments Aoi felt them to be more than ‘just friends,’ sure, so absolutely positive, that Kai knew how he felt. Kai’s touches were always more intensified, more meaningful, to Aoi. In those few seconds when they touched, Kai wasn’t doing it without realizing - he was doing it to be a tease, this Aoi was sure of. Kai wanted to torment Aoi because, the realism was, Kai would never leave his current love for Aoi.
Kai never looked happier than when he was in Nao’s arms with Kagrra,’s bassist never looking more pleased. Aoi envied the way Nao could freely kiss Kai, the way his wavy hair would block Aoi’s vision when he knew their lips were touching, when Kai was kissing Nao back in a way that Aoi knew he’d never know.
But, to Kai’s credit, Aoi was sure Kai didn’t know Aoi was head-over-heels in love, perhaps simply brushed off Aoi’s feelings as infatuation. Aoi, rightfully, couldn’t blame Kai for his feelings. It wasn’t Kai’s fault he’d fallen for the taken man. Kai had been off the market for months now, a fact that PSC simply knew. It never ceased to amaze all just how it happened - after all, the two bands didn’t collide much - but it had, and it was common to see Kai disappear for a few minutes there, an hour here-or-there, even have Nao frequently come in. He wasn’t a loud person, merely someone that sat patiently, quietly, his eyes never leaving Kai’s body. Aoi could only silently watch as Kai would glance his eyes up to find Nao, a smile and blush always adorning his cheeks.
But, in this very moment, he was trapped alone with their drummer, the man who’s head was residing in his lap. Aoi hated being one of Kai’s best friends, never allowed to take that one step up. He twirled Kai’s hair between his fingers, wondering why he had been so late to realize his love for Kai. Sadism must be the way of God, Aoi thought, unamused. Aoi smiled at the way Kai slowly stirred, his hand reaching out to grab Aoi’s wrist. Kai brought it down to his lips, placing a soft, gentle kiss upon it.
“Aoi, you were too damn slow,” Kai murmured, knowing Aoi would catch on. “I love Nao, I really do, but Aoi, I could’ve been just as happy with you. I could’ve been yours.”
“I know,” Aoi replied quietly, eyes glancing up as footsteps grew louder and louder, Aoi’s voice quieter and quieter. “But I’m not going to say I love you.”
“Why not?” Kai whispered back, kissing Aoi’s wrist again, quickly, hurriedly, as though knowing who it was coming to their room. And, Aoi thought, perhaps he did know. Kai always did have a knack for those types of things. Before Aoi had a chance to properly answer, the door opened to reveal an exhausted looking Nao, one who stumbled in wearily to lean against the doorframe. Kai sat up, dropping Aoi’s wrist in favor of attending to Nao. Kai stretched his body before tiredly walking to Nao, taking Nao’s hand in his own to smile. “You look tired, Nao,” Kai murmured.
“I am,” Nao replied, yawning for emphasis. “Let’s go home.” Without tossing any greeting to Aoi, he turned to leave, stopped only when Kai dropped his hand for a moment. He stood on his tip-toes to kiss Nao’s nose, the affection enough attention for the moment. Kai shooed Nao down the hall before walking to Aoi, leaning down to give him a goodbye hug, one that Aoi wrapped his arms around Kai’s thin waist for, not really wanting to let go. It wasn’t a kiss, Aoi couldn’t help but think, but it would have to do. He let go and patted Kai on the back before ushering him off after Nao. Kai gave a small, sad smile to Aoi before closing the door, the sound loud against the bare concrete walls. Aoi distinctly heard Kai call out after Nao, the voice making him smile.
Kai was happy, something Aoi didn’t doubt. He didn’t intend to destroy anything between the couple, didn’t want to start up anything that would cause discomfort between anyone. He loved Kai, he really did, but it was for the sake of Kai’s own happiness that Aoi refused to express his love back to Kai in words. Breaking up the relationship between Kai and Nao seemed inhumane.
He would let Kai be happy with Nao, and Nao with Kai. They deserved each other - and Aoi would do the world a favor and sit quietly, always watching, always waiting on the man that would never really be his.
