Do any of you (especially in the DC area) know where one might be able to get a load of fire wood in the next week or so? Yes, I know it's June, and yes, I do actually need this! :-P
Are you willing to chop some of it up yourself? If so, I know exactly where there is a ton of it. (It's pieces of a few dozen trees that have been cut up already. you just need to chop it into quarters for firewood.)
Ahh, I would be totally *willing* to (at least attempt to!) chop it myself, but unfortunately I don't have any of the necessary tools (my household tool kit is pretty freaking basic!) But thank you!
I can split pieces if we need to- I can bring my ax for the event. I've never had to chop down an entire trunk though. If you have to go this route, I'll try to come a day early and split some stuff up! As I said before, try to get oak if possible- it gives the best coals. The shorter, the better! I'll also see if I can sneak some splints and shavings from work to help start the fire :)
I'll definitely do my best to get the smallest pieces possible for you! I don't want you to have to come up early or spend more of your time splitting wood when you're going to be having so much else to do!
I think tomorrow will be "attempt to track down wood" day (along with "collecting other supplies for the event" day! I still need supplies for a couple of the crafts!)
I bet if you google it you can find some places that clear land year-round and probably have firewood available. Is it for the mill? I would bet anyplace that does have it would be further out in the country if you went local, but I also think if you need enough/have a place to store it, you could probably get a bunch delivered by truck to your location.
It's actually just for a one-time cooking demonstration that we're having for an event at the Carlyle House, and I'm discovering that it's far easier to get HUGE quantities of wood than it is to just get a bit! Ack! :-P
Try local landscaping companies or tree removal services. They usually have firewood from trees they chop down. If you do find a nursery that supplies it, and they ask you what kind, the best stuff is red oak or poplar, cut to 12"-18" (depending on the size of where you're burning it.)
We sometimes get ours at Henricus from a local nursery that does mulch and the like.
At this time of year, I think locally probably Betty's Azalea's Ranch or Merrifield Garden. Of course, I'm assuming you've moved to Vienna (hint, hint, note my user ID ). I'll ask DH tomorrow.
Be careful--while the wood will be dry this time of year, it may not be hardwood.
Hehe...I haven't actually moved out to Vienna yet (can't move until the lease on my current place in the District is up in August!), but I'm through the Vienna area several times a week on my way to and from work--so I can totally stop by places in the area! :-)
