Stupid Modern Fabric Stores!

Help, oh fabric gurus!
So, I'm now making a wool, winter livery coat for Mount Vernon.  The problem is, though, that white or slightly off-white wool broadcloth, or something approximate, is proving extremely difficult to locate!  All I've been able to find so far is $56/yard at Wm. Booth, and that is probably not going to fly, because I need 3 ( Read more... )

When I get home, I can take a picture of the white wool I have. I can't remember what kind of wool it is other than I was thinking of dying it and making it into an unlined Gothic fitted gown at one point. (aka, it's pretty sturdy but light stuff) It's a slightly off white and I have five yards of it that I still haven't figured out what to do with it. If it's what you are looking for, you can have the whole thing for $45...

Do you know if it's 100% wool?
I'm definitely interested--I need something that's pretty sturdy, since it's going to take a lot of abuse being worn by one of the first-person interpreters every day in the winter! :-)

I'm 90% it's 100% wool after the burn test. It smelled like wool and the ash was consistent with wool but it *might* have a bit of silk in it. I'm going to say it's "tropical weight" and feels like the stuff I normally see used for suit pants so I'm pretty sure it could take the abuse. If nothing else, I could snip off a bit and send you a sample of it. I just measured it and found out I have a little over 4 yards, not 5.

http://www.bblackandsons.com/ has tan. I don't know if that's close enough to white. Probably not, but you could call them to see if they have stuff not on their website.

Did you try calling Burnley & Trowbridge? They don't always keep their website up to date and have a lot more than what is listed.

I second Burnley and Trowbridge--definitely worth calling. I've also been very happy with wool from 96 District Storehouse when they are sutlers at Fort Fred--and I know I've seen white/off-white wool broadcloth there on occasion. Their website is http://www.96storehouse.com/Home/tabid/36/List/1/Default.aspx and doesn't currently show a lot of wool, but they too may be worth giving a call if you don't find it elsewhere.
