Public Service Announcement to Those Who Frequent the Computer Lab (and try to talk to me)

Clause Number 1: Hi. You see me? The pissed-looking girl who is muttering obscenities underneath her breath, because her calculations for her homework are off by a factor of about six million? Yeah, that's me. The furrowing of brows, the obvious look of concentration and the frantic calculator button mashing are very obvious signs that I do not ( Read more... )

Got a good laugh out of that one.

I've been turned off on the notion of women's studies as a discipline/major because of something my Anthropology chair told me once.

You passed the test. Good.

She felt that it was somewhat exclusionary. There aren't any Men's Studies majors out there. Women's issues within certain disciplines are more apt, or, if I remember correctly, she said a human studies major, which is what anthropology and sociology basically are, anyway.

I've heard of Men's studies being offered at all-girls' schools, so I guess it just depends where you are. It would be nice if there were more male women's studies majors, but ten bucks says they'll get ragged on for being gay or whatnot. It's a shame, one of the best professors I've had so far was a guy (♥ Paul!) There are two in the program at Duke, but granted, the program at Duke is pretty small to begin with. You'll probably have more male majors in a socially liberal school than a more conservative school. I consider women's studies to be a more specialized antrophology/sociology type of field anyway. Well, sorta, it's hard for me to really describe how it all fits together in my mess of a mind. XD

Yay for me passing the test!
