Actually, I think that if the actor is completely blind to their own selfish ambition, they have more merit than someone who knowingly acts from the same reason. Not as much merit as someone who actually manages to be altruistic, but I think that we should recognize the effort. Most of us don't know every single little reason we have for doing any given thing, so it seems rather unfair to deny a person all merit simply because of a lack of self-knowledge. And if you're wondering why it is that I'm inclined to be so lenient, it's because for every "bad" thing that a person does that I don't like, I always think: "There but for the Grace of God go I." We can all fall into "bad" behaviors so easily. I want to say more, but I can't think how to phrase it. If you want to ask any questions about my current statement, go ahead.
