I don't really remember it anymore, but I guess I remember remembering it, if that makes any sense ( Read more... )

Yes, yes, and yes.

He did his time in jail, and came out a more than decent person. He'd been abused as a kid and when he learned just how wrong what he did was, his world was shattered. He's been clean 15 years, but still has to report where he is. The police laughed at him when he registered as homeless. Some douche in his apartment complex posted fliers about him warning other tenants. He's branded for life. The world is cruel to him, but he's trying to be a good man.

Yeah, Jean Valjean.

Ok, molesting a kid is a bigger deal than stealing bread obviously.

The point is that he did his time and set out to create a new life for himself, but nothing he ever does can undo the crime he did because the government and society has stripped him of his humanity and decided he is eternally a criminal. Like Valjean, my friend has to live in fear of those who would discover him and at the mercy of those that know him. Valjean was tattooed with the numbers 24601 on his chest. The registry is pretty much the same thing: an electronic tattoo that permanently marks the person as a criminal that can never undo or make up for their actions in the eyes of society.
