Thoughts on Strasburg's Debut

So, Stephen Strasburg is making his MLB debut on June 8th, and we are getting tickets, though I don't know where. The Nationals set aside tickets for partial season ticket holders, so we won't be in our usual seats, but we'll be someplace, probably around the same price point ( Read more... )

Fans are fickle people indeed, but hopefully Strasburg (along with the impressive showing by the Nats so far) will convert some of DC's fair-weather fans into real fans over time. I think he's going to be pretty damn awesome, but there's a lot of pressure on his head. If he can handle it, that's really the key. He's definitely got the skills.

Wait, I just want to point something out. The Nats were in dead last in 2008, so they got the overall first pick in the 2009 draft, and they selected Strasburg, and he played in the minors and internationally and whatnot for the last year, and NOW is making his debut.

The Nats also have this year's overall first pick, if you are wondering -- the draft is in a few days.

For the record, Ryan Zimmerman actually had his MLB debut the same year he was drafted. Strasburg isn't. Just nitpicking. I was just having a conversation about this the other day, about how ridiculously rare it is for a guy to actually play in the majors the same year he joins an MLB organization from being an amateur.

EDIT> Also, the above anon comment is NOT me :)

Yes, my bad. I'm so used to the nats being in last place, it's hard to remember which year got us Strasburg. Since August, he's been in the Arizona Fall League, then spring training, and then in Harrisburg.
