May, apparently, cause triggers

Nov 17, 2010 10:49

I never really appreciated the whole trigger warning thing on LJ entries. I understand why they are there. We live in a world where some people have been through horrible things, and reading about similar horrors can cause anxiety. Flashbacks. Upset ( Read more... )

*hug* I'm sorry this has been upsetting for you, and at least you're not planning on traveling by air any time soon.

I am really, really hoping that all the negative press coverage leads to TSA changing its policy by, say, Thanksgiving, because otherwise that's exactly the choice we have to make for Robert: expose him to more radiation -- he had a bunch of x-rays done while in the NICU -- or have someone other than his parents, daycare provider, or medical providers, give my 10 month old child a full body pat down so he can see his grandparents and other extended family members. Because we're not crazy enough to make that drive during the winter, except in the future we just might be in light of the alternative if we fly.

Merry F-ing Christmas, indeed.

Ugh. We're flying on Saturday. Not looking forward to it at all. I'm definitely not letting my kids go through the backscatter xrays.

FWIW, driving is a lot less painful the older the kids get. Last summer we drove from CT to northern Michigan in 1 day (16 hours total, including stops) and the kids were totally fine. Movies on the iPod == good. :) Flying is hella expensive anyway.

We can generally get to Florida in a day and a half, with an overnight stop in Savannah. Last time, we brought food in the car and only stopped for potty breaks and breast feeding breaks. I think that if we pushed it we could probably do it in one day, if we absolutely had to. We have a DVD player for long trips and it definitely = good.

Have you looked into Amtrak? The auto train might be a fun alternative. (I haven't done it, but I've done the sleeper-car thing from DC to New Orleans and it was fab.)

It's pretty pricey, but yes, if we have the funds, we may take the auto train next time we go down. I think the kids would probably love it.

I have been sitting here reading stories of the TSA and their gropings, and I have been in a near-constant state of anxiety about it for two days. And I'm not even planning on flying anywhere any time soon.

I could have written this. I'm afraid for myself, but even more so for women with ptsd for past abuse or trauma, and for the children. The idea of putting kids through either of those options makes me insane with horror. The radioactive porno scanners are not safe, and even if they were I do not want naked pictures of myself or anyone else in the hands of walmart rent-a-cops government employees.

I'll stop before I really get ranting.

--I'd be surprised off you didn't get more dose from cosmic rays on the flight itself

A friend of a friend has done some of that calculation, and yes, the flight's a higher doseI don't know much about the backscatter tech -- what's the worst case if these guys go out of calibration ( ... )
