Anyone know renters laws?

My old landlord, without giving me a list of issues or reasons, sent me half of my security deposit back. I called to try and find out what could have caused $500 in repairs(especially since the place was in same, or some cases better than when I moved in) but his assistant didn't know and just gave me the owners cell phone number. No, they cannot. They need to provide an itemize list, and reasoning as to why. Land lords will do this shit all the time because they don't think people will take the time to contest it.

Thanks Rocky. This sums up what I figured. This is the first landlord I have had that is trying to screw me out of my cash. Buckley(the exroommate) isn't doing shit, and probably won't since he is moving to Turkmenastan in about 2 weeks, so its up to me to get the(or at least my) money back.

The whole place was really clean. We did not put a single nail in the wall, and they never did a walk though with us, even though I called and asked about doing one several times.

I hate DBags like this.
