The court didn't want to originally waste their time with it because they didn't think it would pass either. Like... every one of us was trusting our own state to make the right decision, and many Californians did make the right decision, just not 50%+1. Which is a ridiculous majority for an amendment anyway, considering tax increases require 2/3rds of the vote.
