However, I'd read it as The Hobbit, LOTR trilogy and then the Silmarillion. The Hobbit really does stand on it's own but it does tie in nicely to the trilogy and you can see how the scope of the story changes from Hobbit to LOTR.
The Silmarillion on the other hand reads more like an epic mythology. It concerns the creation of Tolkiens world, it's gods and the ancient history. It's a fun read because you get to learn about Sauron in great length, The high men and Númenor. Elrond's family. It's a great back story however not needed for LOTR to be enjoyed.
Also the Silmarillion has a very heavy writing style and can take time to dig through. Plus it's not one big story it's a collection of several stories some completely unrelated to the rest.
