Just found out an old friend has died. Old as in known him most of my life, and old as in somewhere in between my parents and grandparents age. Arthur Cheesman actually knew my folks in the 60s, and the shop he ran with two other cohorts, Avalon Antiques, became somewhat of a refuge to me as a teenage runaway. I worked for them in my late teens, ( Read more... )

I was in there all the time as a teenager, bought some treasures there. I can see him right now. I'm sorry dear. Love you.

Losing him is losing a good chunk of Portland. I've been worrying this morning for his staff. I don't know what to do for Mr. Dalbow. I'm sorry.

I just dropped a note for everyone at the shop. I'm hoping their will be a public memorial and fitting tribute at some point. I'll keep you posted -- you do the same?

Yes. My hope this morning in turning on the computer was to find a mention of such a thing. Your post happened to be the first site I read. If there is a public memorial, I could wear my first and only suit - courtesy of Avalon. Wow. It took me ten years of hanging about in there to finally make a serious purchase.

There is a memorial scheduled for Sunday, October 22nd. As of Thursday the location was TBA. I'm going to get in touch with someone down there today and get the scoop. I will report back here with the specifics.

I don't think I'll be making it to a memorial today. I haven't heard on a location yet. Was calling Dalbow for other reasons as well, but haven't heard from back from him. As much as I admired Arthur and his smile and felt like the heavens opened whenever he seemed to enjoy something I was wearing, I never knocked on his door as we walked past his place home from school, only hoped he'd be out so we could say hello.

I'll dig around a little more just in case though.
