I got in to the University of Minnesota. Thank God. In September, I will be in school somewhere. Maybe even here! Still waiting to hear back from all the big guns, but staying here and getting my Masters in Classical and Near Eastern Studies, Ancient and Medieval Art and Archaeology (how's that for a mouthful) is not a bad backup plan ( Read more... )

You've done this once before, so I don't know if the effect is still as powerful, but yeah, that first acceptance gives such a lift. So congrats!

Though the name of that degree is about as ridiculous as NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development (which housed the music dept). So is that like an MA, or is at actually an MCNESAMAA?

Yay Kate! Congratulations!

It's nice that you got this one first, so you know it's there, just in case.

Congratulations Kate! I don't know why I didn't realize this, but in a weird sort of way you're studying almost the same thing as me... except I study 50-190CE (and of course, pretty much the east side of the Roman kingdom) while yours goes into the Medieval period. Knights, Kate! Knights!

Actially, we do (will) study pretty much the same thing, just in different ways. I plan to focus on the archaeology of the western Roman empire, preferably around the 1st centuries BCE and CE, becuase it's just such a fascinating, interesting time. The trouble is that such an emphasis (and really, archaeology in general) is couched in such different types of departments. There are anthro depts, art depts, classics depts, near eastern studies depts, and on and on that teach "archaeology". And because I'm very interested in the intersection of traditional "Classics" departments (Greek and Roman history) with traditional "Near Eastern" (Babylonian, Persian, even Islamic), there's a pretty specific lens I want to study through which is hard to obtain. The U does it on paper, but their program doesn't quite have the stature that others do.

So, no, I don't get to study knights. Just early Judaism and Christianity and Roman influence in Greece, Turkey, Israel, and Egypt through the material culture of the region. Cool, eh?

And by western Roman empire, I mean eastern.

I'm going to go get some coffee now.

That is really cool. Harvard has a New Testament through Archaelogy program that has kind of trickled down some information on the Roman Imperial Cult and stuff like that. Actually, it's a lot like what you just said but I guess the lens would emphasize the relationship between Judaism, Rome, and Christianity (with the other ones you mentioned coming up as an aside... though Islamic would obviously be a later impact rather than a contemporary society, and that might not be studied at all here). Despite the no knights, it's still really cool... at least, to me :).

I'm also sure you'll be really good at this type of thing, what with your excursions to Israel and honors project. So congratulations, awesome, and some kind of word that means "They're lucky to have you."
