Technological Woes

I'm having two computer issues which I, embarassingly, can't resolve on my own and must instead seek the assistence of my lovely blog-reading public.

1)  Does anyone know of a good free (or relatively inexpensive) database-type program?  I'm trying to organize information about my bead research into a lovely, coherant format.  Excel sort of works

I don't know much about Filemaker, is it comparable to Access? If so, you can check out http://www.openoffice.org/ for free equivalents of all of the components in MS Office. I think there's just one installer for the whole thing, but you can choose not to install the word processor, spreadsheet program, etc.

And don't listen to Claire when she comes in here with her usual raving about things not being up to her ridiculous standards.
