Life update

 Hi all,

Well, Aaron has motivated me to post a real update about the goings on in my life of late.  Actually, in reality, my life for the last 8 days has consisted primarily of watching the Olympics.  But I digress.

This summer, I spent 9 weeks in Israel: the first eight at Tel Kedesh, excavating, and the last in Jerusalem doing research.  The dig ( Read more... )

So Kate, what kind of program are you in right now that said advisor is at?

I'm in an MA program at the U. The department is Classical and Near Eastern Studies, and my program of study is called Ancient and Medieval Art and Archaeology. It's a mouthful of jargon, so usually I just say I'm studying "Classical Archaeology" or "archaeology." Technically, they offer a PhD, but its kindof a ghost of a program that exists on paper only. In two years, I'll have pretty well maxed out on what I can do here, so its best for me to go elsewhere.

Yay! You make me excited about grad school (though I get a little jealous, reading about you and Aaron working on, like, Real Work for Publication). The last time I heard about your program was... a long time ago, so I'm glad to hear things are heading in a good direction.

This post also reminds me that I should really make an effort to email you more often. We'll see how that works, now that we're both in school again.

I wasn't the one who dropped the email ball last time, for the record.

Congratulations on your academic success - I KNEW you'd get there!

A few things you said:
"other graduate students (with a few exceptions) were pretty obnoxious and surprisingly immature"

God, yes... this shocked me as well. A few of my very good, very serious about science friends were actually stabbed in the back because they weren't cool enough for lab mates (ie they lied to the advisor about the student being lazy, etc). I was shocked by how high school a lot of people still are.

"I'm completely intimidated every time I sit down to write by the responsibility of publishing this material."

Yes... I just submitted my first paper last month. The whole process was completely overwhelming. I had two people who were theoretically advising me in the writing process, but really didn't do much more than edit. It's like, I can't believe they trusted me to do it?!?!

P.S. CHAPEL HILL!!! ;)

It's so good to hear from you! I'm glad you had a great experience in Israel and that you're excited about PhD programs. Maybe one of these days I'll get around to posting, although Aaron did a pretty good job of summing things up already.
