Reminiscences: 93X FEST 2000

May 13, 2020 11:04

I woke up thinking about one of the greatest concerts of my life, which I had not Googled or looked back upon since it happened.

In my head it was the 93X Clam Bake 1999, but turns out it was actually 93X FEST 2000.

Kittie did not perform at 93X-fest - hence, you would not remember their set. Disturbed also cancelled on the third day. American Head Charge actually played the third day before Everclear (yeah, I know). And Slipknot actually wore white jumpsuits instead of the orange jumpsuits they had been touring with in recent months.

I was there, 19 at the time. One of my buddies was in the pit for AHC, and managed to get one of the pig heads. He looped a string of mardi gras beads through the bullet hold in its forehead, and wore it around the rest of the day until a security guard took it away from him in the campground. I don't remember why.

I have zero memory of Mudvayne playing there, which is insane because I STILL fucking love them. Was it them or Coal Chamber who told people to stop throwing mud at the stage? I remember Rayna from CC getting pelted in the face with a mud ball.

Also I clearly recall PM5K requesting to make it "like an old school Bon Jovi show, and get some titties out."

Thanks for sharing this, i stumbled across it when looking up the lineup for the fest that year.

Amazing.

I feel like it had to be Coal Chamber who asked people to stop throwing mud. Especially cuz I hear Dez is an asshole - seems like something he would do. My memory of the Mudvayne set was that they were into it and basically kept telling people to continue throwing it, especially considering it felt so fitting with their name. Their debut LP had JUST came out within that month or two, so maybe they weren't on your radar yet?!

Oh I do seem to recall a band asking for more mud now that you've said that! I think that was right about the time I slipped in the mud while walking down the hill into the amphitheater, landed with my knee on a rock and ended up with a gnarly scar from the cut. Free souvenir! 😜🤘🏻

Re: Dez...I actually met him two years later when CC was touring with AHC. He seemed really nice, but it was literally a 30 second interaction. The rest of the band were kinda stuck up though.
