“Ne, Tacchon, do you want to come along,” Yasu asked, inclining his head as he did so.

Okura smiled and nodded his head in agreement. Times like this, he thought, Yasu really reminded him of the boy he had met a long time ago.

In a wide field on a rainy afternoon, they’d made a promise. To meet each other again ten years from then and ten years after that.

Okura had kept his promise. Ten years ago, he’d waited on that field, although it wasn’t a field anymore. It had been reconstructed into an apartment complex. Ten years ago, he’d waited until the sun went down. But the boy who liked to dress in blue didn’t come. He’d gone home with a heavy heart that day.

Times change, and apparently, so did people.

“Tacchon~” Yasu called out as he grabbed Okura’s arms.

Okura sighed. This wasn’t the time to be depressed.

But he can’t help it. Tomorrow, it’ll be twenty years since the promise was made. He wasn’t about to lose hope just as yet. . He wondered if the little boy would be there tomorrow too.

“Ten years from now on, when we’re old enough, we’ll meet here again. And if that’s not enough, ten years after that we’ll meet again. Right here, at three o’clock.”

Okura walked down the streets of his hometown, happy to be back in a familiar place where everything and everyone was warm and pleasant. He didn’t care if it was drizzling or if the umbrella he was carrying was too small for him. It’s been so long since he’d been here. The last time he’d visited his parents were two months ago.

But he was here for a different reason today. As Okura came nearer to his destination, his heart beat faster. He wanted to hope but he was scared to. He’d already learnt that lesson - the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment.

He turned round a corner, expecting to see the apartment complex, but it was gone, replaced by a swimming complex.

Time changes a lot here.

He walked further to the entrance and that was when he saw a familiar face.

“Yassan?” he called out.

The shorter guy looked at him, surprised.

Yasuda was dressed in all blue - blue hoodie, dark blue jeans and blue and white striped sneakers. He was even carrying a blue umbrella.

“What are you doing here,” Yasu asked.

“I’m meeting a friend. You?”

Okura stood next to Yasuda.

“Yeah, me too,” the shorter guy replied.

They stood in silence for while.

“So… This friend of yours, is it a new girlfriend?” Yasu asked, trying to strike up a conversation.

Okura shook his head and chuckled.

“No. It’s a childhood friend. It’s been so long since I met him. I don’t even know his name.”

Yasu nodded but then he stopped when realization struck him. He looked at Okura, his eyes wide, his jaw slightly hanging open.

“When you met this childhood friend of yours, was it in the middle of a field on a rainy afternoon? By any chance, would your friend be wearing a blue raincoat at that time and carrying an umbrella?”

It was Okura’s turn to look at Yasu with wide eyes.

“Yassan, are you a psychic?”

For some reason Okura can’t comprehend, the shorter guy started laughing and smacking his arm.

“Don’t you get it Tacchon? I’m the friend that you’re waiting for.”

“What?”

Two men were sitting in a café facing each other. One of them, still short and still cute was dressed in all blue, sipping his coffee from the small cup daintily. The other man, who was wearing a green shirt and black jeans and who was taller than the other guy, was smiling as he stirred his straw lazily. His long fringe was still covering his eyes.

“I can’t believe you’ve been close to me all the while,” Okura spoke up. “But ten years, ago, I waited for you, but you never came.”

Yasu looked down on his cup. He felt guilty even though it happened ten years ago.

“I’m sorry about that… I was in the hospital at that time. I really, really, really wanted to come but I couldn’t. Those evil doctors didn’t allow me to get out, even for a little while.”

Yasu looked at Okura with puppy dog eyes.

“Forgive me.”

There wasn’t anything much Okura can do when Yasu was looking up at him like that. He just nodded.

“Yatta!” The little guy exclaimed as he raised both his hand up.

“Ne, Tacchon, wanna come over and play today?”

As Yasu took his hand and led him out of the restaurant, it felt the same as it did twenty years ago.

Times might change, but somehow, their friendship won’t.
