Mexico Flooded

Feb 04, 2010 21:45

I just spent a good hour watching the Mexican news feed on satellite TV and virtually the entire time was spent on the flooding in central Mexico. Seriously, the entire center of the entire center of the country is starting to look like New Orleans during Katrina. It's horrible. The water level has reached 1.5 meters in many areas. In Michoacan, ( Read more... )

dude.. I had no idea this was going on at all.. this is what I get for not watching the news and only gathering info from the aol opening web page (which is all about the ball game and the grammys) and the occasional times I turn on NPR which usually talks about things over seas and far off from the main stories (aka Haiti and This) my parents haven't even said anything yet.. or maybe they have but to each other.. shit.. I need to see if it's affected my spread out family.. most of them are in D.F. Jalisco and Queretaro/Guanajuato.. if not Tijuana, Baja CA N&S and Monterey.. ah shit.

I don't blame you for not knowing, like, I didn't even know until I my dad called me in to look at the news. Then I started looking for info online and found AP and BBC didn't have anything yet. I only listen to NPR for its cultural stuff really, everything else I look for in BBC or the local news outlets of wherever it is I'm looking at. It's the only way I can get an unbiased story.

Actually, Michoacan, Jalisco, Guanajuato (but mostly to the north of Celaya), Edo. de Mexico, and el D.F. are the hardest hit by hte flooding. Firefighters are actually having to ferry some people into/out of the airport. Zacatecas got their second snow fall in the season, which should tell you something about the weather down there.

The only reason I don't worry about my family is that the lake we live next to is dry, thanks to drought, and we're on a higher elevation than the lake by a few feet, with enough of an incline for the water to flow down to the lake, but not near enough the closest hills to worry about mudslides.

That is so awful. I had no clue this was happening. The only thing I seem to keep hearing here is about Haiti. I even checked a few of the news channels just to see and there's not a thing on Mexico. I hope it'll get coverage soon though. With something like this the more people that know, the more people that can help.

I didn't even know about it until my dad mentioned it to me, but yeah, I'm hoping it starts getting more coverage soon.

I had to look hard to find any coverage.

The deaths from the flooding, and the suffering and displacement people are enduring are heartbreaking.

Yeah, I was dissapointed I couldn't find anything easily.

And thank you, it means a lot that you took the time to look. :)
