thewindchime wrote for me again YAY~~
.holding hands.
it was just an idea, at first; a thought that had crossed his mind as they sway on the swings, their hands linked, at the small park they had always passed by on the way home from school.
"let's go play on disneyland," he had said, his smile bashful and he was looking at anywhere but her.
she smiled and gave a small nod as she squeezed his hand a little tighter, tugging at it a little in an attempt to make him look her way; when he did, she felt her heart swell inside her chest, and she almost couldn't wait for the day to come just so she could see how much happier he would be.
only the day never really came, not anytime soon anyway. because barely a week after that their world, or rather his world took a sudden, rapid turn, and suddenly he was no longer tegoshi yuya the boyfriend she could keep for herself. suddenly he was tegoshi yuya the idol, whose hands she could no longer hold at any given time and place.
suddenly what they were had to be kept secret, and that simple idea he had that evening grew into some sort of obsession, if only for him alone.
even as she tried, she could never fully understand why it mattered so much to him. the thought still thrilled her as much as it had done the first time he came up with it, but in times she had learned to let it go. who cared about holding hands in broad daylight for everyone to see, as long as they never let go of each other?
and yet he did care. she knew he did, and sometimes it got a bit too much for her liking, if she were to be honest. because while she would be wholeheartedly happy whenever they managed to spend some time together, would be genuinely content simply with the feel of his warm hand against her own as they curled up together on her couch, shutting out the rest of the world momentarily, he would still have that look in his eyes, and she didn't like it.
"if you keep looking at me that way, i'm gonna have to kick you out," she had jokingly told him on one occasion, and he had laughed at that before pulling her close for some kisses and many whispered i miss you's.
it got better since then. he no longer had that sorry look in his eyes when they were together. not all the time, anyway, because she knew he still did sometimes, when he thought she wasn't looking.
--
when the day eventually comes, the first thing she does is to search his eyes as he links their hands together; they're bright and shining with glee, with no trace whatsoever of the sadness that used to linger there for the past years. she beams at him, he smiles back, and she remembers, again, her one and only reason to look forward to this day.
"you are happy," she says. and relieved and certain and proud and all those other emotions your gaze holds, she continues inwardly, because they don't really matter; what's most important is that he's happy, probably the happiest he's ever been since the day they held hands for the first time.
"i am," he laughs a little and swings their linked hands as if to emphasize his point. she laughs along with him as he drags her round the park, enjoying the date they both have waited for over ten years to come true.
later when the night has fallen and the day is about to end, he'll pull her close to his embrace, land a soft kiss on her forehead before whispering softly: thank you. thank you for never letting go of my hands all this time.
and then she'll say: i love you too.
