According to my copy of Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition (2003), definition 2a of the word “tolerance” states: sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own. Pat the kid on the head, smile down at him/her, and placate their feelings. In other words, make them feel small,
