Back up and and all files that you absolutely, positively want to keep. That is step one.

I'll think about step two in the mean time.

Bios update should be pretty easy and can probably be done at any time. Hit up the manufactor's website, download the update, follow instructions to copy to CD/floppy disk, then boot off of it and wahhh-lah!

When you do decide to reinstall, I'd have the latest service pack for whatever OS you're going to use burned to a cd, and then install that prior to connecting the box to the internet. At their peak, some of the worms floating around would infect an unpatched box in 11 minutes.

Which manufacturer? The bios people?

This is exactly the sort of advice I need. Problems already include: no OS software.

I suppose I'll have to put it on hold for the time being. But Beasty must have read my last post and isn't being such an a-hole anymore. ha.

On a custom built PC, typically it's the motherboard manufacturer. Name brands you get your updates straight from the seller (Dell, HP, etc).

Anywho, it's good to hear that your PC has gotten in line, at least for now.

The motherboard manufacturer - as bnet says, if it's a Dell, that'll be Dell, but often it isn't the company you bought the PC from - here's a tool out there called Epsilon which can identify who made the motherboard.

Glad it's behaving better now; in general, if you give it a nice thorough cleaning (spyware, viruses, old software) and keep it defragmented and all the software updated, thing won't go too far wrong.
