I'm still trying to figure out how to make a conscience effort to maintain the toaster. Does that mean I wish really hard that the toaster maintain itself?

Sadly, yes. Our toaster oven recently burned out and she lobbied hard not to replace it at all over the fire hazard issue; the 4-slice toaster, company-wide email, 4-page instruction booklet taped to the fridge and new fire extinguisher next to the toaster are her compromise.
