It might look/sound funny, but try saying the words outloud so you can feel where the sound each letter has is formed?

Spy: the p seems to come from pursed lips
pool: the p seems to be formed with tighter lips, somewhat like when making guppy noises.

Oh, well. I'm probably wrong about all the technical stuff. =/
