There is a very sweet young pit in one of the backyards across from ours. I've never seen any of his owners interact with him, but I have seen an old lady from my block petting him and talking with him. He's very gentle and curious, and I wonder if he will stay that way considering the fact that his owners don't seem to care much about him.

He has gotten out of his yard on at least one occasion. The door was left open and he went sniffing around the alley, never straying too far from his yard. I was walking to my house and all he did was grin at me when I passed him. There are TONS of pit bulls on my block and out of all of them, he's the only one that doesn't seem aggressive in some way.

pit bulls can be AWESOME family dogs-if they are bred/socialized right- they make awesome playmates for children because they tolerate roughness. They should technically never ever be aggressive towards people. It is the awful breeding and lack of socialization that doesn't help their raps. If your little pit friend is still a puppy-1.5 there is a huge chance that he will go through a fear period and not have had enough socialization and become a different dog. If the dog is over 2 there is a good chance that he will stay just the same. They mature around 18 months to 2.5 years and then their temperments are pretty consistant.

it is just scarey to have any dog lunge at me in the middle of the night but even more scarey to have a pit because they wont stop coming at you if they start.

as a whole i like their breed i think they are fun wiggle butts, very comical and fun to train. but i do not trust any stranger pit that i come across outside.
