Putting down a pet is so awful. On one hand, you're doing the right thing, but having to make that decision when your instinct is to be selfish and keep the pet around... it's a really bizarre situation. Sorry you had to go through that, though I'm sure you realize it was the best thing. And it was good of you to be there as support even though it wasn't strictly your animal.
Our dad had "actual" prostate cancer (early stage) a few years ago. They operated, and he was absolutely fine. Your stepdad seems like he's on top of it, so things will work out. It's scary, but it can be dealt with if it's caught early enough!
no one ever likes to hear the word "cancer" (understandably), but from what I recall from school, prostate cancer can be one of the slowest progressing cancers ever. Often when it happens in much older men, they don't treat it because it is likely that other conditions would be fatal first...it literally is that slow.
And as person before mentioned, it seems he's in pretty early stages, or pre-stages--the earlier, the better.
I'll keep your stepdad in my thoughts and prayers. Oh...and the part about your aunt's dog made me cry...you're a wonderful niece and I'm sure both she and sheila appreciated your presence.
Love you ducky. COFFEE SOON. When do you leave? I move to West Seattle in early August.
