What should I do with the background? I tried a simple sky blue to white gradient, but that was a little to mediocre looking. I would really appreciate suggestions.

You should add Bryan's glasses. As for the background, I'd go with a hazy red color...Like a desert style sunset.

I actually like that you both aren't wearing glasses, cause your eyes look squinty which is what you both look like eaarly in the morning. i remember THAT.
