Quick recap: In the previous part, Sam and Finn went to Puck’s pool party. This is set a couple weeks later.
Sam wakes with a groan, feeling the persistent nudges from Finn. He knew why the early wake up call, it hit him as soon as he opened his eyes, it was the day they both had to be back at school with no excuses. With a loud guttural groan Sam buried his head into one of the pillows, attempting to pull the duvet over his head too, but Finn managed to remove it from the bed before he could do so.
“Do we have to go back today?” Sam mumbles into the pillow.
“Yes, we agreed. So hurry up and shower, we’re already going to be late and we haven’t even ha breakfast yet.” Finn spoke as he left the room, leaving Sam to his own devices.
Sam didn’t think he could even stomach breakfast, he was too nervous. Sam knew Dave and his buddies would be waiting for them to come back, and regardless of what Principle Figgins promised there was always a way for Dave to get at him. Karofsky even made the effort of going to the hospital to threaten him. Sam was sure that once they stepped foot back into school his life would go from being okay right back to being the worst.
It was all he could think about as he showered - how Karofsky and everyone else were going to torture him and Finn. In the locker room, in the halls; the only place they were really safe was in Glee Club and that 1 hour a day wasn’t going to save them for the rest of the day. The teachers didn’t care, at least most of them didn’t, so Sam could expect at least 3 slushies in his face every day. He made a mental note to take extra clothes for the future attacks.
Sam sat through breakfast trying to keep a straight face for Mrs. Hudson at least; Finn wasn’t buying any of it. As soon as they got into Finn’s car he returned to the fear ridden expression
“Sam, it’s going to be fine.” Finn soothed as he started the car. “I promise.”
“You can’t promise that, Finn. You can’t stop everyone, besides you weren’t there when we were outed. You don’t understand.” Sam slouched back into his seat, looking out the window. He didn’t mean for his words to come off as angry but he couldn’t stop himself. “I’m sorry.”
He could tell by the absence of a reply that Finn was angry, or at least annoyed. Sam decided to not say anymore, he knew it would only make it worse and it wasn’t until they had made it to school and parked before Finn made a single sound.
“I know you’re worried, and scared. And I know I don’t know what it’s like exactly but can we just stay together today, and we can get through it.” Finn sat sideways, holding onto Sam’s hand. “I love you, and we can do this but we can’t do it if we’re attacking each other.”
“No, I know, I’m sorry. I just can’t stop thinking of what they’re going to do, where they’re going to do it.” He could barely look Finn in the eye for more than 5 seconds. He could see the worry, and the fear that was surely been seen in his own eyes. “Let’s just get this over with.”
Sam let go of Finn’s hand, grabbing his back pack and jumping out of the car. He could see people looking as soon as he started walking towards school; people exchanging laughs, whispers, glares. Sam wasn’t ready for any of it. He could feel Finn’s hand on his back, and Sam couldn’t help but feel how unfair it all was. Finn was happy comforting him, but Sam could even bring himself to look to him for too long - at least not in front of people.
All eyes turned to Sam and Finn once they got to the halls. Sam kept his eyes down, stopping at his locker but trying to make sure he could see Finn from where he was standing. Aside from a few comments from behind him, most people didn’t bother him but he could practically feel their eyes burning into his back. He could only imagine what they were thinking. He wondered if Finn had the same feelings.
He could see Finn give him an encouraging smile at his locker before leaving for his first class; unfortunately their first class separated them for the first time in weeks. Sam left for his own class, joining up with Rachel whom helped him catch up during the lesson.
The lesson went okay. Rachel had to stop him from beating down on some kid who made it his mission to torment Sam throughout the lesson. Thankfully Sam refrained, although very tempted to show the school that he wouldn’t just take it lying down, that he would fight back. Once the class had finished Sam rushed to meet Finn in the empty Spanish room, they both had a free period and sadly had a lot of work to catch up on.
“How did it go?” Finn asked, pulling out a set of books and settling down next to Sam with a smile. Obviously his class was abuse free.
“Okay, I guess.” Sam sighed, starting his reading. “I just don’t think I can just sit there and do nothing.”
Finn didn’t answer right away but Sam could tell what was coming. They had already had this discussion numerous times where he would eventually agree to not sink to their level and ignore it all but Finn didn’t seem to understand, Sam seemed to be the main target of everyone’s attacks and Finn somehow just flew by unnoticed.
When Finn lectured him on staying under everyone’s radars, Sam nodded along as he read the book in front of him - neither of which stayed in his head for long. He couldn’t stop thinking about getting back at everyone for what they did, getting revenge on whoever outed them though he was sure it was Karofsky, he just wanted it to be over. Sam was sure that Santana would back him up, help him even, but he didn’t want to go behind Finn’s back.
Giving up on reading, barely understanding the words on the page, Sam let his head rest on Finn’s shoulder. They didn’t talk, Finn kissed Sam’s head a couple of times, but it was all just silent. As soon as Sam settled on Finn the door swung open, causing both boys to jump a little as a laugh entered the room.
“How cute.” Karofsky jeered, shutting the door behind him.
Sam stood immediately with his fists clenched, shortly followed by Finn, but that only caused further laughter from the jock.
“You shouldn’t have come back.” Dave spoke, circling the table. “You thought the pictures were bad? Just wait.”
Sam made a beeline for Dave but for some reason Finn held him back, even after Karofsky practically admitted to outing them to the whole school, to Sam’s parents, he was the reason Sam left school to go to Finn, the reason Sam was even driving so recklessly when he got hit by the truck. He ruined everything for them both and Finn wasn’t even going to do anything about it. Sam tried to shake him off, but Finn wasn’t letting up at all.
“Ooh, the faggot fights back.” Dave laughed, standing only a couple feet away from them both - Sam still fighting Finn’s firm grip on his arms.
Nothing more was said until Dave left the room. Sam freed his arms from Finn and pushed him away. “What is wrong with you? How could you just stand there as he admitted to everything?”
“And what? Let you fight him here? Sam, this isn’t the way to go about it.”
“Oh so you expect me to just sit there and smile as the person who screwed up my entire life laughs at us?” Sam was getting angrier as the seconds went on.
Finn didn’t answer; they both just stared intensely at one another until the bell rang. Sam left first, grabbing his books and heading to his next class. He couldn’t believe Finn was being so cool about everything. He didn’t even try to defend either of them.
Once Sam sat down next to Kurt for his next class, slamming his books and drawing attention from most of the class, he let his head fall to the desk. He didn’t even look up once the teacher started talking. Kurt seemed to leave him alone, starting on his work before even trying to pull Sam up.
“Bad day?” Kurt asked.
“The worst. How do you do this everyday? I just want to hit everyone.” Sam sighed, finally sitting back up and opening his book. He was too far behind to understand what the teacher was talking about anyway. “Well Karofsky mostly.”
“It gets easier, I guess. I have been doing this for years.”
Sam was thankful Kurt didn’t go on a whole ‘it gets better’ rant, although there was still plenty of time in the class, he had heard the phrase too many times for his own liking. And yet Sam still couldn’t understand how Kurt didn’t lash out every day.
“Sam, I should probably tell you something now you’re back. You can’t tell anyone else, not even Finn because he will freak out.” Kurt started, not giving the blonde time to jump in. “I mean it, Sam, no one can know. The only reason I’m telling you is because you need to know.”
He was seriously confused at this point. Between the constant ranting of the teacher and Kurt’s now very serious low tone, Sam had no idea what was going on.
Kurt’s voice now practically a whisper into Sam’s ear, “Karofsky is gay.”
Sam almost jumped, having to cover his mouth in order to not draw attention to him and Kurt. It didn’t make sense at first, but then when Sam thought about how dedicated Karofsky was to destroying people’s lives and putting them down could only mean that he was hiding something. No one acts like that if they’re content with themselves and who the are. It made perfect sense!
“Wait, how did you find out?” Sam asked, simply curious.
“He kissed me.” Kurt mouthed. “And then tried again.” The boys voice returning to a whisper.
Sam suddenly felt so much better about the day, about himself. And yet a part of him was still angry. Karofsky outed him to the world, to his parents - you don’t just get away from that kind of thing without any repercussions. The only way Karofky would ever understand would be if he was publically humiliated too. Sure he didn’t have any kind of proof but even if he started a rumour it would probably shake Karofsky just a little, but getting proof probably wouldn’t be so hard if he could just get Dave to admit to him and maybe catch it on tape and play it for the school.
Normally Sam wasn’t so manipulative or even mean in any way, he preferred the kind way in life, but Karofsky had caused so much and not even just for him - he ruined Finn’s life too, and years of torturing Kurt.
He and Kurt didn’t speak much about the topic and spent the remainder of the class trying to help Sam catch up on what he had missed - Sam still didn’t understand the class but nodded along until he could get out.
Once the bell rang Sam thanked Kurt and left before most of the other kids, he ignored the looks in the halls and kept walking until he met up with Finn at his locker. He greeted the taller boy with a kiss, his nerves of people watching washed away once his lips met Finn’s, even though the kiss only lasted a couple seconds it made him feel much better.
“Well, hey!” Finn chuckled. “Look who’s finally smiling again.”
“Yeah, well I realized that I have a lot to smile for.” Sam connected their lips again for a short moment before letting Finn dispose of his books and allowing them to both walk the halls to the choir room.
Reaching the choir room, both boys were welcomed with hugs and cheering. It felt good to be back with his friends again, Sam had really missed seeing everyone every day. It was great to just sit down with Finn and be himself because in Glee Club they were accepted completely, and loved without a doubt.
Sam ended up sitting with Santana, whilst Finn and Rachel sang a duet in preparation for their next competition. Normally he would get jealous but unless Rachel changed genders he didn’t have anything to worry about. Between Santana’s joking remarks, and Puck’s numerous ways of mixing words with ‘bad ass,’ Sam was definitely glad to be back and Finn seemed happy too. But he knew things could change for the worst if he went through with the plan to get back at Karofsky but he couldn’t just let that go.
