A couple of days passed with Sam still in the hospital. His mom stayed most of the time though they didn’t really talk much, it was too hard for Sam to talk to her because he knew there was no point getting reattached if as soon as he got the all clear from the hospital he would be on his way to New York and completely alone again.

Puck visited a couple of times just to see how he was but he didn’t stay long. Finn was a no show which Sam expected. He had asked Santana to try get him to come at least so Sam could tell him face-to-face that he would be going to New York, but nothing so far.

Sam mostly spent his time trying to move without being in agony and reading up on the facility he would be going to. It looked okay considering it was practically a psych ward, but it was more of a high class psych ward. The rooms looked hotel like standard which Sam would probably get used to. He would have a tutor visit him 2 times a week so he wasn’t behind on school work. Sam wasn’t allowed any visitors though, no family, no friends - the program said because it would interfere with his treatment which involved hours long one-to-one sessions with a personal psychiatrist. Suddenly everything didn’t seem so bad, and Sam thought that if he put all his energy into getting better that they would let him out early and he could finish school at home instead.

He was trying to sleep when he heard Finn’s voice from outside his room, following by Santana’s forceful tone. Sam almost didn’t want to get up to see him, he wasn’t sure he even could. It was a few minutes before the door actually opened and shut, Finn clearly wasn’t excited about this either.

Sam sat up slowly, his ribs aching, and turned to Finn. The tall boy had sat down and immediately let his gaze fall to the floor. He didn’t see it at first but he noticed the dark bruises on the boy’s clenched fists, and when Finn looked up he had a dark black eye.

“Finn, what happened?” Sam questioned.

“Puck isn’t the type of guy to sit there and let me hit him.” Finn laughed slightly. “Karofsky did though.”

Sam was shocked. Finn never seemed the type to inflict violence on anyone; he usually hit the inanimate objects.

“Finn, I have something to tell you…”

“New York.” Finn interrupted. “Puck told me, he didn’t mean to but he did.”

Sam couldn’t tell if Finn was angry or sad and it didn’t help that the boy’s head was hanging down and looking at the floor.

“My mom said they specialise in cases like mine.” The blonde started, craning his neck to get Finn’s attention. “This will be good for me.”

“Cases like yours? You mean suicide.” Finn stated with no emotion behind his words, and he wasn’t wrong. “Why didn’t you say something, Sam? About what you were thinking, I mean this couldn’t have come out of nowhere right? I looked it up, I just wanted to understand. Not that I do, it’s just confusing.”

“I was going to tell you, I was, I just didn’t know how.”

“But you could tell Puck?”

“No, Finn. It’s not like that. He was here when my mom told me about it. Puck and I aren’t anything, he’s just a friend.” Sam knew when he said it that there was going to be a harsh reply from Finn about the fact that he slept with his ‘friend’ Puck, but Finn didn’t say a word but he gave Sam a look which was completely unreadable. “Finn, you know I love you and I didn’t want to hurt you.”

Finn stood abruptly and Sam panicked slightly, thinking he had gone too far but the boy didn’t leave or even head to the door like Sam expected.

“You want something to eat? I’m starving.” Finn pulled out his wallet and waited, observing the now confused expression all over Sam’s face. “Well, we have a lot to talk about so I might be here for a while.”

“Um, yeah, sure.” Sam muttered. “Anything but jello.”

Finn left the room with a laugh and Sam took a sigh of relief the sign that Finn wasn’t here to argue but to work things out. This meant Sam had the chance to explain, or at least try, why he did what he did. So Sam took this moment alone to consider what he wanted to say. The Puck thing was too complicated. Sam knew it would be the hardest thing to explain but he knew it would be the first thing Finn would want him to explain.

“Okay, I got Doritos - I know you love them - and in case you’re still reinforcing the healthy food, a sandwich but I’m sure anything from a hospital is really that healthy. Iconic, right?”

“I think you mean ironic.” Sam laughed, reaching out and plucking the Doritos from Finn’s hands. “Thanks.”

He ripped open the bag and dipped in his hand before stuffing his face with the orange chips. Suddenly the room was only filled with the crinkling noises and Sam’s chewing. Everything was awkward. Finn just stared at Sam and then to the floor when Sam noticed. It got worse when Finn reached out and grabbed a handful of the Doritos which meant both boys were too busy chewing to even begin to get past the awkwardness.

Neither of them spoke, they barely looked at each other for longer than 5 seconds, it wasn’t until Puck (of all people) walked in as loud and boisterous as ever. As soon as he saw Finn though Puck slowed himself down and started retracing his steps out the door as if neither of them noticed.

“No stay.” Shockingly it was Finn standing and pulling Puck back into the hospital room - as if things couldn’t get any more awkward - and offering him the seat leaving Finn standing. “This will go better with you here.”

Puck looked confused. Sam was just as confused.

“What will go better?” Puck asked.

“Look, we all know this is messed up but we have to talk it out before Sam leaves. I just figure if we’re all here, at the same time, we can all get on the same page.” Finn started. Suddenly he seemed so in control and not so awkward and confused about everything. “I don’t even know where to start but I just know this is how it has to go down.”

Finn was right thought Sam was sure all three of them being together wouldn’t end well. All Sam had to do was observe the dark bruise around Puck’s eye to know that this potentially could go completely wrong.

“Umm,” Sam sat up, tossing the Doritos aside because they would only distract him.

“Well I guess we can start with us?” Puck jumped in, clearly referring to himself and Sam and their ‘activities.’

The room was silent again. Finn was nodding in agreement and Puck was switching glances between both boys. Sam still had no idea what to say.

“I guess I’ll start.” Puck stood up, pacing back and forth slightly. “I don’t know what it was between me and Sam and I still don’t because I’m confused about everything right now but whatever we did was a mistake because regardless of my feelings you two were still dating. So I guess I’m sorry.”

Puck’s feelings? Sam was even more confused. Sure, he was convinced that something with up when Puck practically begged him not to leave and everything after but Sam thought that would have passed.

Sam was just as confused about his feelings. Everything with Puck was so strange.

“I get that, Puck. I mean, it still feels like crap but I know you’re both sorry.” Finn spoke directly to Puck. “I’m sorry too, about your face I mean.”

“It’s cool, I totally deserved that.”

Sam was still very much silent, and very much confused. Finn and Puck were being so civil about everything and he couldn’t even think of one word to say. He couldn’t completely explain why he had sex with Puck, drunk or not, and he couldn’t explain why he tried to kill himself. He was completely lost in this conversation.

“Sam, you cool?” Puck asked, standing at his bedside next to Finn. He must’ve zoned out a little.

“Yeah. Sorry. I just… pain meds are really kicking my ass.” He lied.

“Sam, you’re not on any.” Finn added suspiciously. “Sam, what’s up?”

Sam didn’t think Finn was that aware of his medication, or lack of. “I just, I don’t know what to say. All I can do is apologize because I am sorry that I slept with Puck, I am sorry for what happened to Karofsky, and I’m sorry that I hurt you…. Both… And I’m sorry that I messed both of your lives up.”

“You didn’t.” Puck added.

“No, I did. You’re telling me that I didn’t screw up your mind with everything? And Finn, I turned everything upside down for you. You don’t have to try make me feel better, I know I screwed up.” Sam explained.

Finn seemed to have give up and sank back into the only chair leaving Puck to pace the room. It was silent again but Sam preferred it this time. Silence meant no one was trying to make excuses for what Sam, it meant Sam was right.

The silence was interrupted once again but by a nurse poking her head through the door. “Visiting hours are over, and Sam needs to get some rest.” She removed her head but pushed the door open.

Puck didn’t speak he just gazed at Sam intensely and nodded before leaving him with Finn. The taller boy didn’t speak either, Finn simply leaned over and kissed the side of Sam’s forehead that wasn’t a huge scar and left closing the door behind him.

Sam turned on his side and closed his eyes again and attempted to let himself drift off into a deep sleep but he couldn’t stop thinking about everything. Memories, faces, words flashed through his mind meaning Sam would have yet another sleepless night and tiring next day.
