25 Sam got zero sleep. Literally speaking, he lay awake the entire night. He paced a little until his ribs hurt but mostly he just led there and thought of a way to make it up to Finn and Puck. Nothing came to mind but what Sam had learnt from life, if anything is that it’s the thought that counts and Sam had a whole lot of thought.
Normally, Sam wouldn’t give up but it all seemed so pointless especially since he was being shipped off to a different state all together as soon as his doctor gave him the okay. He didn’t have the time to even try making it up to them, at least not from a hospital bed. It was pointless but Sam decided that he’d use his last few days here to at least talk to them both, and act normal and try to forget everything like they too seemed eager to do.
Sam was thankful for the fact that he was in pain every time he moved. It meant, at least with his logic, that he couldn’t board a flight for at least a few more days. He hoped anyway.
“Oh you’re awake!” Sam’s mother entered the private room, a large amount of bags in hand - that’s when Sam started to panic. “Good news! You got the all clear and our flight is booked for 10!”
“Wait, what? The all clear? I can barely move! And 10, as in 3 hours from now?” Sam sat up in his bed. “Mom, I can’t. I haven’t even had the chance to tell Finn goodbye, can’t we wait til tonight?”
“The flights are booked, Sam. The babysitter is booked. I thought you wanted this.”
“I do, I want to get help, and I understand that we have to act fast but I have to say goodbye to Finn. I can’t just leave.” Sam started making his way out of the hospital bed very slowly. “Mom, please.”
Sam’s mother seemed to stop and think about it, for a minute at least, but she shot him down. Sam optioned to call Finn, make sure he could get to the airport - if he even wanted to - so they could say goodbye properly. It was his only option really. His mom didn’t seem to understand the problem, which led Sam to believe she never really cared for Finn at least not as soon as she found out they were dating. It wouldn’t have been that much of a problem to transfer the flights to a later time and rearrange the babysitting times, she was just being stubborn. She wouldn’t even let him call Stacie and Stevie to say goodbye. Clearly she wanted him gone as soon as possible. Normally Sam would be hurt by that but after everything, Sam wanted out as fast as he could.
It must’ve taken Sam forever to get dressed. He ached everywhere, even got stuck a few times. He tried to stall a little in hopes Finn would turn up at the Hospital but no such luck. He didn’t even realize he hadn’t eaten breakfast until they got into the cab and passed a couple fast food chains. His mind was too scattered to care though.
All he could think of was what he wanted to say to Finn if and when he got to the airport. An apology for sure, but Sam wanted to tell Finn that he still loved him but also that he should forget about Sam and move on and find someone new. Odds are Sam will be in New York for a long time and even if they work through their problems, he couldn’t expect Finn to wait around for him for that long. It was the right thing to do. It was going to be hard though.
This all depended on Finn getting Sam’s voicemail and making it to the airport on time, which was a fun, lengthy drive. A drive in which Sam was stuck listening to his mother explain all the things she’s learnt about New York in the past 24 hours which meant nothing to Sam because he was going to be stuck in a nuthouse for all of his time there.
Sam resorted to rifling through some of his luggage, pulling out a couple of comics which were thankfully packed. He figured they’d distract him for long enough, at least he hoped.
It was when they arrived at the airport that Sam really started panicking. He had told Finn to meet him at their gate but there was no sign of him. The waiting was almost painful. Sam couldn’t stop pacing, not matter how much it was hurting him to move. That’s when Sam remembered that he didn’t even call Puck. There was no time for Puck to drive to the airport now but Sam could say goodbye on the phone.
As soon as he held the phone to his ear, hearing the dial tones go on and on, he blocked out the fact that a phone was ringing right in front of him and right in front of him stood not only Puck but Finn too.
Puck hugged him first but then Finn, holding him tighter than Puck and therefore causing some serious pain and wincing. It hurt but it was worth it. He was just so glad they came, both of them.
“So you’re leaving.” Puck stated. “Sucks dude, I at least hoped to kick your ass on halo a few more times first.”
Sam laughed, “You could’ve tried, no offence but you suck so bad at Halo.”
Puck just smiled in return. It was easier to say goodbye to Puck, not because Sam didn’t care as much but because Puck was so easy going whereas Finn, like Sam, worried a lot.
Sam’s panic rose again as soon as he heard a lady announce that boarding was starting on his flight. He didn’t have a lot of time left.
“Don’t worry,” Puck laughed. “I’ll distract her and you two can do whatever it is you two do.” He winked and proceeded to run to the young lady at the gate. He hadn’t changed at all through this.
Sam turned to Finn who was putting on a smile just as Sam was, both of them knew that it was fake.
“Forget everything that’s happened, okay?” Finn smiled, the tears clearly building in his eyes. “I’ll wait for you. I’ll be here when you get back. I still love you, and I’ll wait forever if I have to.”
“Finn, stop. Don’t say that. When I get on that plane I want you to forget out me, okay? I want you to go home and carry on your life, maybe even find someone new. You can’t wait around for me anymore, and I love you too much to let you.” Sam couldn’t look at Finn, he looked so hurt. “You deserve more, Finn.”
“I don’t want more, I want you.”
In the background Sam could hear the woman calling all passengers for his flight. He really didn’t have long.
“I’m gone for 6 months Finn, that’s a long time.” Sam explained.
“I don’t care, I’m waiting for you whether you like it or not, okay?” Finn laughed. “You need to go now or your mom is going to kill us.”
Sam looked back at his mother’s red face. “Okay.” Sam latched himself to Finn one more time.
“I love you, Sammy.” Finn smiled. “See you in six months.”
Sam pulled away and Finn stepped backwards letting Sam go. He turned to his mother and headed for the gate, too afraid to look back because if he did he wouldn’t go.
“I’m gonna miss you, bro.” Puck whispered quickly as they hugged briefly at the gate.
Sam just nodded because if he spoke he would just break down into tears and then he left, letting the woman close the doors behind him and his mother. He didn’t want to cry but he couldn’t stop the few tears that leaked down his face. His mom didn’t say anything; she could tell this was hard for Sam.
He kept thinking to himself as he took his seat that ‘he needed this’ and that ‘he would be home before he knew it’ but he didn’t really believe it anymore. It was all so real now and it hurt more than any of his physical injuries. He was leaving behind the one person he’s truly loved and a great friend, no matter how hard it had been in the past Sam would willingly take the struggle over the heartbreaking agony.
He really did hope it would be over before he knew it.
