[Javert's gaze seems to glint and harden, as if he is attempting to discern whether this man truly meant what he said, or if he was subtly making sport of the Inspector. He raises a thick black brow. The prominent skeptic in him was more inclined to believe the latter. It was not often that men sang their praises of the police. Never occurred in his lifetime, as far as he was concerned.
