If I remember right, the Beatles had just hit it big in 1962. I'm not even sure if anyone outside England knew of them back then.

I'm glad to hear you liked what you heard, though. As for recommendations, it depends on what you're interested in.

Did they? They definitely hadn't come to America yet, then. Maybe my English professor heard of them.

[He considers the idea of George listening to 'Can't Buy Me Love' and decides that no, probably not]

Well, what do you listen to?

Until then, I think they were mostly playing smaller gigs in clubs around England. That's how I remember the story going, anyway.

It depends. Growing up I listened to anything that caught my attention. Nowadays? I like classical music, mostly. I'm not a big fan of most contemporary music in my world.

You say that as if you're old.

Should I turn down the rock and roll?

I'll be fifty-eight, in 1999.

I'll make sure to play the Buddy Holly at full volume.

The gesture would be very much appreciated. I don't think most people from my time even remember who he is.

Even with what happened to him, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens?

There's a song that refers to his death as "The Day the Music Died" that still plays on the radio sometimes. I don't think many people under the age of 50 know what the song's referring to, though.

It's weird, I know. For you, it's something recent that you'll probably never forget. But to my generation, it's practically ancient history.

What's the song called?

I remember exactly where I was when it happened, too.

American Pie. You're about a decade or so too early. I know it came out in the 70's.

I think every generation has that kind of moment. The moment that defines an era, you could say.

What defined your era?

A lot of things. The Berlin Wall coming down was a pretty big deal, even though I was too young to understand the significance at the time.

I have to admit, you're starting to make me feel like a history teacher, here.
