A cold day in December, 2009.
Leeteuk calls him that day, his voice shaky, obviously crying.
"Read the news."
Heechul would usually ignore the request, knowing Leeteuk, but the tone in his voice convinces Heechul otherwise. A sense of dread settles into the pit of his stomach as he opens up the internet on his laptop.
Front page. An old picture of Hankyung, smiling. Thousands of comments.
"Super Junior Hankyung files termination of contract with SM Entertainment," the headline crows, and a thousand thoughts race through Heechul's mind, mostly ending with pleasedon'tbetrue, thisisajoke, and hankyungwouldneverdothis.
He understands now why Leeteuk was so upset.
Shaky fingers curl around his phone, and he taps out a quick text to Hankyung, not sure if he wants to talk to him yet in person.
"Saw the news, is it true?" he tries to come off as calm, breezy, expecting Hankyung to reply back with laughter, too many emoticons, and reassuring him no, it's not true, he's still a part of Super Junior, the media are just screwing around with them as usual.
His phone buzzes, his heart rate speeds up.
Tears unconsciously well up in his eyes as he reads, "Yes."

Lee Soo Man is, to put it mildly, fucking pissed at Hankyung. But Lee Soo Man wasn't there by Hankyung's side when he insisted on performing even though fever ravaged his body, when those first few months he was forced to perform with a mask on, when homesickness so great led him to withdraw to his room and not talk to anyone for hours.
It was Heechul who bathed Hankyung's forehead with cool towels, and who snapped at Ryeowook to make more chicken broth; Heechul who strode up after that performance and removed the mask from Hankyung's face and met his stunned gaze; Heechul who was the only one that noticed Hankyung's silence, and slipped out at midnight to buy Chinese potstickers that brought the warmth back to Hankyung's eyes.
The memories crash into Heechul like a tidal wave, and he feels numb, drowning in nostalgia.
It was Hankyung and Heechul, the two that always got drunk and trashed on soju and Leeteuk would frown disapprovingly at them when he found them in asleep in haphazard positions across the couch and living room floor.
Hankyung's Korean was still rough, but it was Heechul who corrected his mistakes on variety shows, Heechul who talked for him when Hankyung didn't quite know the words, Heechul who quizzed him on Korean vocabulary in their room long into the night and taught him the occasional swear word (Leeteuk accuses him of teaching Hankyung all the swear words).
Hankyung and Heechul, always the team. Heechul's biting comments, Hankyung's easygoing personality that absorbed Heechul's bitchiness but was never affected by them. Hankyung always knew Heechul was just joking, that under all that snark Heechul would never be so disrespectful as to truly insult the Super Junior members they loved.
Heechul is proud to say that he is not a weak person. Yet the tears don't stop for days.

It takes months for the wound to heal, months of reading the news for updates on Hankyung's court case, to see Hankyung (Hangeng, now, isn't it, since he basically gave up his Korean identity) and his growing success in China.
Conversation between them, the scarce times they met face to face (usually with other members present) and the few text messages sent back and forth, have been stilted and awkward, and conversation declines and eventually Heechul doesn't talk to Hankyung at all, for months.
It's such a weird feeling, when before they would talk every day - if Hankyung was in China, Heechul would text or call him, but in Korea Hankyung would drag Heechul's "lazy ass" out of bed - Heechul never understood why Hankyung got up so goddamn early to practice his ballet moves or whatever - and throw him into the shower. Griping, Heechul would emerge 30 minutes later ("You are so. slow." "It takes time to primp properly, you know.") and they would head down to breakfast.
Their routine.
Heechul can almost predict why Hankyung isn't talking to him - doesn't know how to apologize, wants a "clean cut", doesn't want to be guilty when he hears Heechul's broken voice.
Acceptance slowly rolls around, but it is bittersweet.

The second ELF fanmeeting, May 2010.
Heechul talks about the depression he felt, the loneliness in his life when Hankyung wasn't there anymore. His eyes unusually brim with tears when Kangin takes the stage, when he sees Leeteuk's features light up as Kangin steps out from the shadows.
He wishes Hankyung were here too.
He knows Hankyung watches every Bonamana performance, just like Kangin and Kibum do. He knows that Hankyung, in China, is and always will be a part of Super Junior, part of Kim Heechul.
Back in his room, Heebum purring at his side, Heechul sends Hankyung a text message, the first one in months.
"我想念你."
I miss you.
Seven minutes later (Heechul was not counting, okay), while watching the latest episode of a drama, his phone buzzes and Hankyung's reply pops up on the screen.
"나도 보고싶어."
I miss you too.
