Oh, Orson, How Could You?

I stopped reading Terry Goodkind when he dedicated one of his books to the US Intelligence Community, saying that they work unceasingly for peace and liberty while being (if I remember this correctly) constrained by the shackles of evil that would demonize them. While I don't believe the various US intelligence organizations are some sort of evil ( Read more... )

Hasn't Orson Scott Card had a bit of reputation for being something of an intellecutal-hating, woman-subjugating type fellow for a long while now? I recall a 2000 Salon.com interview (which I can't access right now because that site's down for maintenance) where neither he nor the interviewer came out looking all that sane in the end.

Weeeeelllll.... he does have some good points-- he just draws the wrong conclusion. I agree 100% with the following observation that he made:

"They might even realize that by not reporting this story, true or not, they would save Muslim lives. If patriotism couldn't rein them in, then surely simple humaneness should ... one might suppose"

except that then he goes off into psycho lala land. sigh.

Sadly these sorts of revelations are nothing new with him... kind of shocking that someone who wrote such an impressive work about the consequences of war and prejudice would happen to be so right wing.

I'd be interested to see how you felt about the intelligence community if you worked on the other side of the aisle. It's an eye-opening experience.

It was like reading Ann Coulter without the manic barbs--and probably even less insightful. Was this another strawman or muffin for your circle to rip to shreds or do you profit in some roundabout way from visits to this site?

Sadly, no. Orson Scott Card is (was?) one of my favorite science fiction writers. Have you ever read Ender's Game? It's one of the best sci-fi novels of the past 30 years. Anyway, he's a really nice man in person, and while I know his personal leanings are a bit to the right, I didn't realize just how far to the right. Reading that column (the first time I'd read any of his political commentary) disappointed me a lot...
